these days much has been spoken about mumbai being converted into a place like shanghai...
in d early 1990's shanghai was similar 2 mumbai but eventually turned out 2 be one of the loveliest cities, d best of china. mumbai has been rated as d best city 4 business, so now ndustrialist n politicians have a dream of converting mumbai in2 a city with international standards....
please put forth ur views on dis topic.... n let us knw wats ur opinion!

I think Mumbai can be like Shangai or Singapore...

Don't answer it now think as Mumbai 2010..

Currently there are many huge bridges connecting Nariman Point to Worli & from Worli to Bandra.. Mumbai Metro Rail Project will be starting in March 2008 & estimated to be completed in 2010. Very big builders have taken land in Bandra Kurla Complex with the view to build commercial area which will be ready by late 2010.. Many other bridges on Highways in & around Mumbai.. Government is thinking about underwater highway from Mazgaon to Nava Sheva.. Still not fixed but they are researching about its feasibility..

All these instances are enough to build the hope of a nice future..

yes it ll b but we all mumbaikar,s have to change ourself wat say mi right .?????????????????????

yes vinay i agree with u. d pedder road project, d metro rail project all r at a halt due 2 various reasons, one being lack of funds. n let me tell u here... shanghai was full of slums n jst like mumbai in d last decade but an independent body that took up d development task of d city. d government was as usual facin probs... so its important 4 us 2 no rely on d government...

WELL.....................ONLY CHANGE OF NAME MAY B FEASIBLE!!!

BUT MUMBAI CAN BECOME SHANGHAI IF IT DEALS WITH CERTAIN NEGLIGIBLE ISSUES LIKE........POLLUTION, ENCROACHMENTS, TRAFFIC, UNPLANNED URBANIZATION, POLITICIANS, POPULATION EXPLOSION, STRIKES & PROTESTS R FEW TO MENTION……….

THE ROWS AND ROWS OF SLUMS THAT ADJOIN MUMBAI AIRPORT ARE NOT A PALATABLE FIRST GLIMPSE OF THE CITY THAT GREETS THE INTERNATIONAL TRAVELER AS THE PLANE LANDS. ON THE OTHER HAND, PU DONG AIRPORT IN SHANGHAI IS STATE-OF-THE-ART……………HOWEVER THE STUDIES HAVE REVEALED THAT N ADDITIONAL ANNUAL INVESTMENT OF $5 BILLION WILL BE NEEDED TILL THE YEAR 2013 TO TURN MUMBAI INTO A WORLD-CLASS CITY………………BUT FIRST LET THEM PLAN THE REHABILITATION OF MORE THAN 1 LAKH SLUM DWELLERS & THEN THE REST………..

THE BEST REASON FOR HAVING DREAMS IS THAT …………………IN DREAMS NO REASONS ARE NECESSARY.

THANX.

i very well agree with pallavi and just supporting a few of her points

What about the drainage problem thats gonna occur coz of the construction of new buldings. Very big builders have taken land in Bandra Kurla Complex with the view to build commercial area which will be ready by late 2010. The government has no idea what is going to happen to the city in times of floods and the rainy season

eg: Just eave the tap of your loo open for 3 hours or so and ul find that ur whole house is covered with water

Similarly if these builders keep acquiring the permisision for construction of new buidings what is gonna be its effect on the drainage system of mumbai. Naturally, the level of water on roads during floods is gonna increase, leading to an increment in the problems faced by the ppl.

Currently there are many huge bridges connecting Nariman Point to Worli & from Worli to Bandra..
Does the gov have any idea what this is gonna lead to. The river originates at Powai and meets the Arabian Sea at Mahim Creek flowing through residential and industrial complexes of Powai, Saki Naka, Kurla, Kalina, Vakola, Bandra-Kurla complex, Dharavi and Mahim over a distance of about 15 km.

It exits in the mahim bay and at a few kilometres is the worli bandra bridge. Now that bridge is gonna stop the flow of the so called river and resut in more accumulation of sewage.

Just a few mm of rains compared to 26/7 and mumbai was in a mess, infact mumbai looks like a bombed city with all the excavated garbage, potholes, open electrical wires etc.

Check out Powai road towards Seepz once the flyover ends, its a disaster waiting to happen.

India's commercial capital lived out its worst nightmare on July 26, facing the fury of the dark skies for nearly 48 hours. Lakhs of Mumbaikars were stranded at suburban rail stations, while others were forced to spend the night on streets as Mumbai's infamous traffic refused to budge. A brave few chose to walk the miles, while others decided to take no chances with the swirling waters and instead waited it out at empty halls.

This highlights Mumbai's poor infrastructure and shows how far the city has to go before it can achieve its ambition of becoming another Shanghai.

Mumbai cannot be turned into a Shanghai at least in the near future. To really bring about a change the government needs to take some harsh decisions which will affect their political games.

CAN MUMBAI be turned into SHANGHAI or SINGAPORE?

Well yes. It can. It’s just that we require an action plan 2 do this with ease.

ROADS: Mumbai’s roads are getting better. Though there are potholes during monsoons, the govt. has been developing prime roads into concrete cement roads. SV road and Link roads are examples. The government is planning very good strategy to maintain the traffic with ease.

AIRPORTS: Mumbai's airports are definitely on becoming world class. The new airport at VASHI has been approved by the Central govt. of India. This will be Mumbai's international airport. Sahar Airport will be transformed into domestic circuit. Santacruz airport will continue its operations. This will give immense ease to passenger traffic in Mumbai.

Railways: Railways need more improvement. Called as Mumbai's lifeline, but needs improvement. The four-way lines connecting churchgate and virar would be helpful. The frequency of the trains is the best possible. Also, new services are introduced wherever possible. Railways had some new locals. They look better and provide better ventilation to the commuters.

Pollution: Pollution is getting acute in the city especially in suburbs. The government has already planned a strategy to curb pollution. Industrial units are being given warnings 2 vacate from mainland Mumbai. They are provided facilities outside Mumbai in CIDCO- BELAPUR, VASHI, and VASAI etc.
Example: SEKSARIA INDUSTRIAL ESTATE IN MALAD RECEIVED WARNINGS TO VACATE THE BUILDING IN 2MONTHS TIME. ELSE THEIR LICENSES WILL BE PERMANENTLY CANCELLED.
We are also increasing CNG consumption in cars. This helps in reducing the pollution. The statistics in a month back edition of Hindustan times said that the pollution rate was decreasing in Mumbai inspite of pollution increase.

Slums: Slum Rehabilitation Programmes have been adopted by the Government of Maharashtra. The most recent one was development of Asia's biggest slum:-Dharavi.
Dharavi will be turning into a residential area. The slum dwellers will be given stay in such residences. The people will be given better facilities.

GARBAGE: this is a big issue I forgot in pollution. I APPEAL TO ALL MUMBAIKARS TO NOT THROW GARBAGE AT PUBLIC PLACES. This will help reduce the possibility of epidemics like DENGUE MALARIA and others.

HOSPITALS: Hospitals are being developed. The no. of beds per hospital is increasing. The government hospitals are improvising its services. The view about the govt. hospitals among citizens is changing.

BEACHES: the beaches are being improvised. Major Beaches are cleaned on daily basis by BMC. The number of DEATH RATE among sea fishes and lives is decreasing.

Flyovers: there are currently more than 50 flyovers in Mumbai. Traffic is easing due 2 improvements in roads and bridges.

DRAINAGE: The drainage system is improving. I mean the government is taking action to clean all drains and MITHI river project is in full swing. The gutters are running properly. No kind of problem arises now. In monsoons, the drainages are affected. But we can’t really blame the government. It is the Mumbaikars themselves who are to be blamed. People keep spreading garbage. The polythene bags in gutters blocks the flow. This leads to such adverse situations.

Now since someone spoke that development will harm drainage development, lemme tell u something. It’s known by BMC. Did u know that pipelines are being constructed well below the earth in Mumbai itself?
The Charkop area was provided water facilities from Powai. The BMC constructed underground tunnels. The people never realized. The pipes functioned and Charkop area started receiving water. The people were staying above the tunnel but didn’t realize. So, the question of impediment 2 development is wrong here. Such drainage pipes are also under construction.

MUMBAIKARS: THE MUMBAIKARS ARRE THE REAL ASSETS. THEY NEED THE IMPROVEMENT TO MAKE MUMBAI BETTER. I APPEAL TO ALL THE PEOPLE TO STOP POLUTING AND DIRTING MUMBAI. LET US MAKE MUMBAI A GOOD PLACE FOR ALL THE PEOPLE. THE GOVERNMENT IS TAKING ALL POSSIBLE STEPS. BUT THEY WILL BE OF USE TO US ONLY IF WE LET IT REMAIN CLEAN. PEOPLE SPIT WHERE THERE IS A BOARD “DON’T SPIT”. THE ATTITUDES OF THE PEOPLE SHOULD BE CHANGED. DEVELOPMENT IS CERTAIN. JUST WE NEED TO STAY UNITED LIKE WE DID IN CASE OF THE RECENT BLASTS. COMEON PEOPLE, LET US MAKE MUMBAI A BETTER CITY TO LIVE IN. DO ALL GOOD DEEDS WHICH U CAN DO AND DO NOT SPOIL THE BEAUTY OF MUMBAI.

I am very glad that MANAGEMENTPARADISE.COM is spreading awareness among people about developmental issues through such posts and topics. THE SITE IS A HIT AND WILL BE REALLY HELPFUL TO CREATE AWARENESS.

HELP BETTER MUMBAI. PALLAVI AND RUVI. I M SORRY TO SAY BUT PLEASE CHANGE YOUR ATTITUDE THAT MUMBAI CANT CHANGE. IT SURELY CAN. WE NEED 2 BE UNITED.

THANKS TO MANAGEMENTPARADISE.COM THAT HELPS US DISCUSS SUCH TOPICS THAT WILL SURELY BE IMPORTANT FOR US IN FUTURE.

ANY OTHER POINTS I MISSED OUT, PLZ POINT IT OUT. ANY AREA WHERE THERE IS SOME PROBLEM IN DEVELOPMENT, POST IT RIGHT AWAY.

KEEP AAMCHI MUMBAI CLEAN.

everybody is talking about the urgent need of putting the chaotic situation in order in Mumbai. This is not the first time, nor it is going to be last, when periodic spasms of politicians, civic administrators and highly placed vested interests, erupt for the makeover of this urbs prima of the country. Many theories, projections and plans are thrown periodically for public consumption for changing the face of slums infected Mumbai. But the fact is that Mumbai is on life support system and the main cause of this is the whoopingly high corrupt political system and incompetent, unaccountable civic administration. The biggest tragedy is that there is no leadership, in government or in civic body to honestly address the ills facing Mumbai. A dynamic person who can give result oriented performance is the need of the hour. Infrastructure and open spaces should have been given top priority. High rise high end towers, malls, multiplexes, entertainment plazas will not change the chaotic Mumbai but good quality wide roads, effective sewage system, open spaces for public and social housing can make positive impact on the quality of life in this city of opportunities. The biggest folly is that before passing of the plans of grandiose buildings there is no impact assessment study of the area. This is must for providing adequate infrastructure in the developing areas. The biggest anarchy exist in slum rehabilitation front. A hordes of profit seekers have jumped in this field in the garb of developers, who have no background of real estate development. The free housing to illegal encroachers will not work in long terms. Instead the government must encourage a mortgage system for urban poor. At the same time social housing must be on the top of agenda for MHADA. It has land, professionals and resources to do so. There are virtually no green spaces for this over crowded city, which is claustrophobic. At no cost the green areas, be sacrificed to aid greedy development. Mumbai can rise and develop as a world class city, all it requires is political honesty and determined leadership to implement the schemes for Mumbai.

mumbai is certainly a lovely city, india's financial capital, n if we want 2 convert it in2 an IFC there's a lot v got 2 do...

well, d best part about mumbai is it's citizens who have a never say die attitude. floods may come but water will recede, terrorists may explode mumbai, but bombs will go off air... mumbai shall experience d worst of situations but mumbaikars will repor 2 work... dis is wat has enabled mumbai 2 b amogst d best ctities in d world. wat say????
