Specialization Dilemma is one of the problem that generally a student comes across. A BMS student in his 6th Semester or a MBA student in the 3rd Sem.

We thought of helping you sort out reasons whether why one should opt for a career in Marketing and Job opportunities in Marketing career.


This is an exclusive Interview with Mr.Vinod Puri, B.Tech,(Hons.)(I.I.T.-Bombay), Ex-C.E.O. Batliboi Ltd. visiting faculty NMIMS & SJMSOM.


1)What are the various Career options in Marketing?

Ans:
There are different segments of Marketing like Advertising, Brand Management, Market Research, Public Relations.


2)How does one understand Marketing career is right for him?
Ans:

- Marketing is vital in every organization and hence it provides a great number and variety of job opportunities.
-You can communicate your ideas clearly and good at generating new ideas.
- Marketing often appeals to not only creative thinkers, but also numbers-minded statisticians.
- Most of the Marketing jobs are time demanding. If you don’t mind working for long hours. Jobs in Advertising and Media extend till late evenings, sometimes weekend. Also it involves lot of leg work. You should be able to perform under pressures and meet targets and deadlines.
- Problem-solving attitude.
- Good communication and Interpersonal skills, should be able to work in an ambiguous environment.

If you have all of these, then Marketing offers different opportunities. Choose on that best fits your interests, nature, and ability and go for it!


3)What are the Entry level jobs in Marketing ?

Ans:
Depends, which Marketing track it is: essential it begins with Sales and Marketing
Entry-level candidates are cheap, plentiful, and easily found. You should be able to cite your USP (Unique Selling Point ). Mention in your resume what makes you stand out from the crowd, whether it is an internship or any professional training highlight that . Create a demand for your profile, it’s very essential.

4)Please shed some light on Marketing Research as a career choice, kind of profiles and traits required.

Ans:
The positions in Market Research are MR Manager, MR Supervisor or MR Analyst.
To take up a Market Research position, the person should have both qualitative and quantitative analytical ability, because the job depends on your ability to gather data from human subjects, crunch numbers, and interpret the results accurately.

5)Most of the graduates and Marketing post graduates are fond of Advertising. What are the Careers aspects in Advertising?


Ans:
Account Executive/Cordinator at the entry level. Other positions includes Advertising Manager, Advertising Sales Director, Media Director, Media Coordinator, Media Buyer.

6)What is the qualification important for a career in Marketing?

Ans:
Graduation from any stream is the basic qualification for getting enrolled in the MBA in marketing. Candidates should be fluent in communication skills and in the art of convincing someone. MBA in marketing is a two-year degree program. Apart from the regular courses, MBA in marketing through distance-learning mode is also available.

7)What is the scope for Career in Marketing in India and prominent industries offering Career in Marketing?

Ans:
Marketing is a hot field — and expected to keep growing for the next decade. India is rapidly growing as a lucrative business destination of the world, a career in marketing is exciting and opportunities for marketing professional are abounding. From joining as a marketing executive, one can go on becoming a marketing manager or product manager within a very short span of time. Thus, those with a vision and passion for climbing up the ladder with hard work can choose a marketing career.

All the industries require qualified marketing executives some of the leading industries in India are HUL, Reliance, Tata, Bajaj, Hero Honda, ICICI, ABN Amro, Bank of Baroda, Birla Sun Life and so many.

8)Internet Marketing is a growing career field, your views in it.


Ans:
Yes, Internet Marketing is finding more and more importance these days. Almost for all industries, web marketing has become a tool to generate revenues and augment customer base.
But Internet Marketing is a skill centric job and the marketer needs to keep himself abreast with the latest developments. There are various courses for Online Marketing, one can apply for an Associate Program (two-year) or a Bachelor Program (four-year).

Those with a degree in Internet Marketing can look forward to entry level positions like a Copy Writer, SEO Specialist, Online Public Relations executive, Business Development Executive, Research Assistant, Media Planner, Programmer.etc

Today Internet Marketing is required in all most all kind of Business, You need to take one care while enrolling for a Internet Marketing Course. The course should be Accredited and meets the required standards. Should be a certified course and is relevant in the work field.

9)What is the pay scale for jobs in Marketing?
Ans:
According to Salary surveys there is a significant pay gap between the US and in the Indian scenario. Base pay for marketing directors ranges between US$203,100 in the US and US$40,000 in India. Marketing directors in the US are followed by those in Italy and the UK, who are paid around US$169,100 and US$167,800.

Median Salary for a Senior Sales Executive having less than a year experience is 1.4 to 2.6lac anualy.
For 1-4 years of experience - 1.46 -2.9lacs.
For 5-9 years of experience - 1.64-3.63lacs.
For 10-19 years of experience - 1.78-3.72lacs.
For 20 years and above - 2.82-6.5lacs.

10)Five suggestions for building a smooth and successful Marketing career?
Ans:
1)Take-up a number of Marketing Internships( Gives you Industry experience )
2)Take-up a number of activities outside classroom. Learn Self-Marketing its very essential.
3)Go for short term Marketing programs and training sessions
4)Build a network of Professionals and keep in touch with them.
5)Read Marketing Journals, Industry resources and bookmark various job boards ( Hunt for best opportunities)
