The meaning of the term electronic commerce has changed over the years. Originally, "electronic commerce" meant the facilitation of commercial transactions electronically, usually using technology like Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) to send commercial documents like purchase orders or invoices electronically.

Today it includes things that may more correctly be termed "Web commerce" -- the purchase of goods and services over the World Wide Web via secure server (HTTPS, a special server which encrypts confidential ordering data for customer protection) with e-shopping carts and electronic pay services, like credit card pay authorizations.

I feel, the ecommerce industry will only keep growing. Especially in these times, people don't like to spend money on gas to drive to a store, when they could buy it from the comfort of their own home. The ecommerce clothing industry is starting to go down since people would rather try on their clothes than buy it immediately. However, technologies are being tested now that could potentially turn an online clothing store, into your own private dressing room. The ecommerce market will always grow, even when the market falls.

A large percentage of electronic commerce is conducted entirely electronically for virtual items such as access to premium content on a website, but most electronic commerce involves the transportation of physical items in some way. Online retailers are sometimes known as e-tailers and online retail is sometimes known as e-tail. Almost all big retailers have electronic commerce presence on the World Wide Web.
Electronic commerce that is conducted between businesses is referred to as business-to-business or B2B. B2B can be open to all interested parties (e.g. commodity exchange) or limited to specific, pre-qualified participants (private electronic market). Electronic commerce that is conducted between businesses and consumers, on the other hand, is referred to as business-to-consumer or B2C. This is the type of electronic commerce conducted by companies such as Amazon.com. Online shopping is a form of electronic commerce where the buyer is directly online to the seller's computer usually via the internet. There is no intermediary service.

India's new e-commerce law, which blesses electronic signatures and e-transactions, will change the way Indians do business and advance the country's position as an emerging superpower in the global high-tech industry.

Electronic commerce involves a wide range of activities. In its simplest form, the goal of electronic commerce is to improve the way in which business is conducted, through technology. This could be as simple as establishing a computer-mediated relationship between consumer and business, between business and supplier, or between supplier and manufacturer. It could involve automation of existing business systems, such as transaction or manufacturing processes. On the web, electronic commerce often means marketing, and online sales. Behind this though is a vast range of activities and technologies, powered by back-office systems. Electronic commerce is more than just sales!
