Masters in management an MBA alternative?

the MBA is still THE postgraduate education in Management. At least in Europe, however, Master in Business Administration programs face a servere threat by a relatively new program: the Master of Science in Management (often called MiM).

In contrast to the MBA, the Master in Management does not require work experience. Similar to the MBA, MiM-programs ususally have a length between one or two years, and about two thirds of the worlwide MiM-programs do not require an undergraduate degree in business or economics. Moreover, on average they are much cheaper than MBA programs.

Master in Management (MIM) programs worldwide do not require a first degree in business or economics.

This is the result of an evaluation of 463 MIM-Programs by the platform Master in Management Compass. In contrast to MBA programs, Masters in Management allow graduates to start immediately after obtaining a Bachelor degree.

Thus, graduates from all academic backgrounds can study a general management program without obtaining the work experience needed for an MBA.

Graduates with a degree in business or economics can avoid redundancies in the curriculum by choosing those Masters in Management that actually do require and build on such an academic background

According to a press release, the information platform offers a database of 463 MIM programmes worldwide, and in particular a search and filter function for sorting programmes that require a business or economics degree from those that do not.

Only 124 of the MIM programmes require a business or economics first degree. The remaining 339 either address an extended but restricted target group (for example, graduates of social studies) or are open to graduates of all disciplines.

Thirty per cent of full-time MIM programmes require a bachelor degree in business or economics; while 70% of full-time and 84% of part-time programmes are open to all disciplines.
