Marie Claire

Marie Claire is a monthly fashion magazine conceived in France but also distributed in other countries with editions specific to them and in their languages. While each country shares its own special voice with its audience, the United States edition focuses on women around the world and several worldwide issues. The magazine provides the reader with health, beauty, and fashion information in each issue. It also has several online editions – UK, US, Honkong, Australia and Malaysia.

A brief history

Jean Prouvost created the first issue in 1937, which was distributed each Wednesday. French readers flocked to newsstands to buy this early weekly edition, which was a huge success. However, in 1942, German occupation authorities in France stopped the distribution of most magazines, and Marie Claire was one of them. The magazine was not redistributed until 1954. At this time, it became a monthly publication versus a weekly one. In 1976, Prouvost retired and his daughter Evelyne took over the magazine and added L'Oreal Group to the company.

Slowly but steadily, Marie Claire started spreading itself to different parts of the world. It ventured into the markets of US and UK in the 1980’s and steadily to other countries around the world. Marie Claire US edition is now part of Hearst Corporation, based in New York City. Marie Claire UK is part of IPC Media, based in London. In 2006, it launched its website www.marieclaire.co.uk with daily news, catwalk show, photographs and reports, fashion and beauty buys of the day, daily horoscopes and competitions.

Today, Marie Claire is published in Australia, Brazil, France, Greece, Hungary, India, Italy, Japan, Malaysia, Netherlands, Philippines, Russia, South Africa, Thailand and Turkey. It has 26 editions in 13 languages and sells over 4 million copies. In 2005, it received the award for the Best Woman’s magazine and Magazine of the Year.

India

In India, the magazine was launched on June 5 2006 in partnership with the Outlook Group which marks the 26th edition of the magazine. It has been positioned as “thinking women’s magazine”. Marie Claire India, which has the tagline of `let me be me', began a campaign against moral policing with its launch.

The magazine offers Indian readers a unique editorial mix of serious journalism with glamour, transposed and adapted to the Indian reality by an Indian editorial team.
The magazine is priced at Rs 50 and contains around 230 pages.
