Course Description
This course guides students through the process of implementing and growing a venture. The goal for the
semester is for each venture team to have an operating business where the first customer is secured and the
potential for revenue is evident. Students who enroll in the class are expected to complete a draft business
plan.
You will be expected to evaluate, validate, and revise your business plan during the course of the semester
and submit the plan to a review panel at two points during the semester. All students will complete and
deliver both business and execution plans as part of their work during the semester. A template for the
business plan will be provided. I want all ventures to use this template and present in the format provided in
the document.
For those students who have not completed a business plan, significant additional work will be required to
create and validate a venture in the 17 weeks of this class. If you have enrolled in this class and do not have a
venture idea or a completed business plan, you will need to work especially hard to meet the course
requirements and you can expect to spend 8 hours per week or more for each of the 17 weeks.
You will present your venture at the 2013 Regnier Family Foundation
Venture Creation Challenge (VCC) in April 2013.
Please see the UMKC Institute for Entrepreneurship and Innovation website for more information about the
Venture Creation Challenge. The website is accessible through this link:

Course Objective
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
? Identify and pursue a business opportunity in either an independent or corporate setting.
? Define fundamental issues related to starting a business and learn how to assess the risks, problems,
and rewards involved in the venture process.
? Work in a team environment that challenges all team members to work toward a unified goal.

models how to design and implement strategies.
? Identify how you can reach out to potential customers, partners, suppliers, and experts.
? Understand the key components of a business plan
? Articulate marketing, management and operational questions.
Teaching Philosophy
I want students to understand and implement the concepts of an entrepreneurial business operating in the
real market place and to derive value out of the class, and, therefore expect you to attend all scheduled
classes, deliver credible work on time, and seek assistance when you need it. To that end I am available by
e?mail, phone or for meetings in my office. I encourage students to bring issues to the forefront so that we
can discuss and resolve any concerns you might have in completing the course successfully.
Course format:
I will use a combination of any or all of the following instructional methods.
? Instructor presentations / Voice of Entrepreneur presentations
? Video presentations
? Student presentations
? Class discussion/exercises
? Reading and case studies
? Projects
? Assigned homework
Step by Step – Deliver Throughout The Semester
You will be required to work on a venture as part of a team. You will have a set of assignments throughout the
semester that will build towards a viable business and operating plans. Your task for this class is to define
these plans and implement the first phases of them in your venture – you will operate your business by
defining and selling a solution to customers. The purpose of this method is for students to learn from real
world experiences. PLEASE ask questions about your venture or assignments throughout the course. DO NOT
wait until the end of the semester.

Outside of the Classroom
This class is designed as an experiential learning process, and there is an expectation that the teams will meet
outside of the class schedule to design, create, and collaborate and implement their business plan.
Articles
Periodically, reading material will be distributed for student review. These articles will connect with the
pedagogy of entrepreneurship. The articles purpose is to bring to life real world business situations that are
happening around us right now and expose situations or events that are relevant to venture creation and
business practices today.
Books
The required textbook for this course is available from Amazon or other booksellers. It is not stocked in the
UMKC bookstore. The Startup Owner’s Manual: The Step by Step Guide for Building a Great Company. I
expect every student to have or purchase a copy of the book as I will assign readings and draw examples from
the book. Here is the link for Amazon if you wish to purchase it there.

Step/dp/0984999302/ref=la_B007N71OSK_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1345739799&sr=1?1
Class Participation
Class participation is an attempt to account for each student’s contribution to the class. A high level of
participation means that you are well?prepared, add value to class discussions, listen carefully to others’
contributions, and ask appropriate questions. Quality of preparation and participation, not quantity, is the
relevant issue.
Attendance and promptness:
Students are expected to attend every scheduled class and not come into the class late or leave early. In the
final grade analysis the student participation along with class attendance is taken into consideration. For each
three classes missed you can assume your grade will drop one letter grade. Active class participation enhances
the learning process, and the dialogue between instructor and students, and student to student will draw out
the interactive dialogue course content, or lessons of the day.
Class Policies
? Class attendance is required for all sessions.
? Come to class on time – late arrivals disrupt the class.
? Late assignments will be accepted only if prior arrangements have been made with me. I expect you to
deliver quality work on time. You have teammates, figure out how to deliver among yourselves.
? Class participation is a requirement to successfully complete the class.
? There will not be any extra credit offered.
? Turn off cell phones and do not text message while in the class. If inappropriate phone usage occurs I will
ask you to leave the classroom.
? Our guest entrepreneurs and mentors are contributing their time to assist you. Put your computers and
phones away when they are speaking or working with you.
? Blackboard and email will be used to post assignments

? Execute the capabilities to transform ideas into action items and learn from your peers and role
models how to design and implement strategies.
