Management in all business and organizational activities is the act of coordinating the efforts of people to accomplish desired goals and objectives using available resources efficiently and effectively. Management comprises planning, organizing, staffing, leading or directing, and controlling an organization (a group of one or more people or entities) or effort for the purpose of accomplishing a goal. Resourcing encompasses the deployment and manipulation of human resources, financial resources, technological resources, and natural resources. Since organizations can be viewed as systems, management can also be defined as human action, including design, to facilitate the production of useful outcomes from a system. This view opens the opportunity to 'manage' oneself, a prerequisite to attempting to manage others.
Each of us must have experienced that feeling of helplessness when no matter what we do or how much we try things just keep getting out of our hands. There are some situations where there actually is nothing we can do to fix things, but majority of the problems we face in business or for that matter in life always have a solution. The thing is to find the right solution at the right time, the right time being before the situation gets out of hand or before your competition finds a solution. This is a short and simple example of management.
Let’s take the example of Yin-Yang from the Chinese philosophy. In Chinese philosophy, the concept of yin-yang which is often called “yin and yang” is used to describe how seemingly opposite or contrary forces are interconnected and interdependent in the natural world; and, how they give rise to each other as they interrelate to one another. Many natural dualities (such as male and female, light and dark, high and low, hot and cold, water and fire, life and death, order and chaos and so on) are thought of as physical manifestations of the yin-yang concept. The concept lies at the origins of many branches of classical Chinese science and philosophy, as well as being a primary guideline of traditional Chinese medicine, and a central principle of different forms of Chinese martial arts and exercise. Yin and yang are actually complementary, not opposing, forces, interacting to form a whole greater than either separate part; in effect, a dynamic system. Everything has both yin and yang aspects, (for instance shadow cannot exist without light). Either of the two major aspects may manifest more strongly in a particular object, depending on the criterion of the observation.
From this it can be said that management cannot exist without disorder or disorganisation. If there is management there are going to be problems. One problem gives rise to a solution and that solution gives rise to a new and completely different problem. Hence management works in a cycle and is a never ending process
Management is simply utilising your immediate environment to solve a problem. Management is finding an order in chaos. Chaos exists in the unlimited number of choices we have in case of resources, ideas, methods, etc to utilise and order comes in selecting a particular idea, method and resources required to solve the problem. Management does not only mean coming to a solution but it includes all the steps that have to be taken to reach that particular solution.
Mnagement steps are gernally confined into the following catagories-
Planning
Organising
Staffing
Directing
Controlling
Management is done by everyone everywhere, though the level, feild, skill and style differes from person to person, place to place and time to time. Therefore there is no perfect or standard style of management, seeing as every problem has its own unique solution and has to be treated differently. Many a times it is seen that this major point is overseen by people and the same solutions are applied to different problems; such an act might or might not work depending on how similar the situations are. This cannot be treated as management if it is done without even analysing the situation and comparing the two situations in question.
Management is a very delicate art which is practiced by everyone but is mastered by a lucky few.
