Management in IT

Description
BSC Project

1. Management
Management focuses on the entire organization from both a short and a longterm perspective. Management is the managerial process of forming a strategic vision, setting objectives, crafting a strategy and then implementing and executing the strategy. Management goes beyond the organization’s internal operations to include the industry and the general environment. The key emphasis is on issues related to environmental scanning and industry analysis, appraisal of current and future competitors, assessment of core competencies, strategic control and the effective allocation of organizational resources. Business management is the process of the planning, co-ordination and control of a business. To survive in the long run, a business must be profitable and liquid. To do so, it must create sufficient value for its customers so that its revenues exceed its total costs. The overall task of business management is to address successfully the problems that confront a business in its role as a value-creating organization.

3. History of Mobitel
Mobitel was incorporated in 1993 as the second mobile-telephony provider to enter the Sri Lanka market. Originally a collaboration between Sri Lanka Telecom and Telstra Australia, Mobitel has been wholly owned by SLT since November 2002. Following the successful implementation and operation of an AMPS/TDMA network in the country, Mobitel launched its GSM operations in January 2004, with the deployment of a fully fledged GSM network in the 1800 MHz band which is EDGE/GPRS enabled. In 2005 and 2006, Mobitel traded the 800 MHz band for slots made available from the 900 MHz spectrum. With this enhancement, Mobitel embarked on a field trial of 3G at the 1st International Buddhist Conference held in 2006, setting the stage for the launch of its 3G services in Sri Lanka. Investments committed to date for this state-of-the-art technology to provide 3G and GSM totals over US$ 200 million. This includes increasing the present number of base stations from 600 to 1,500 by the end of this year.

10.Planning and Decision Making Process
Simply put, strategic planning determines where an organization is going over the next year or more, how it's going to get there and how it'll know if it got there or not. The focus of a strategic plan is usually on the entire organization, while the focus of a business plan is usually on a particular product, service or program. There are a variety of perspectives, models and approaches used in strategic planning. The way that a strategic plan is developed depends on the nature of the organization's leadership, culture of the organization, complexity of the organization's environment, size of the organization, expertise of planners, etc. There are a variety of strategic planning models, including goals-based, issues-based, organic, scenario, etc. Goals-based planning is probably the most common and starts with focus on the organization's mission, goals to work toward the mission, strategies to achieve the goals, and action planning. Issues-based strategic planning often starts by examining issues facing the organization, strategies to address those issues, and action plans. Organic strategic planning might start by articulating the organization's vision and values and then action plans to achieve the vision while adhering to those values. Some planners prefer a particular approach to planning. Some plans are scoped to one year, many to three years, and some to five to ten years into the future. Some plans include only top-level information and no action plans. Some plans are five to eight pages long, while others can be considerably longer. Major differences in how organizations carry out the various steps and associated activities in the strategic planning process are more a matter of the size of the organization -- than its for-profit/nonprofit status. Small nonprofits and small forprofits tend to conduct somewhat similar planning activities that are different from those conducted in large organizations. On the other hand, large nonprofits and large for-profits tend to conduct somewhat similar planning activities that are different from those conducted in small organizations. Also, in addition to the size of the organization, differences in how organizations carry out the planning activities are more a matter of the nature of the participants in the organization -- than its for-profit/nonprofit status. Detail-oriented
Page | 22

people may prefer a linear, top-down, general-to-specific approach to planning. On the other hand, rather artistic and highly reflective people may favor of a highly divergent and organic approach to planning. Planning and Decision about a company is a very important thing. The Mobitel Company is using Goals-based strategic planning. Because it affect to the increase Company portfolio. In Mobitel Company they decide and plan very good things suddenly they decide these. In this Company some employers mind to decide things always inside the Mobitel Company done these things. Benefits of Strategic Planning Strategic planning serves a variety of purposes in organization, including to:

1. Clearly define the purpose of the organization and to establish realistic goals
and objectives consistent with that mission in a defined time frame within the organization’s capacity for implementation.

2. Communicate those goals and objectives to the organization’s constituents. 3. Develop a sense of ownership of the plan. 4. Ensure the most effective use is made of the organization’s resources by
focusing the resources on the key priorities.

5. Provide a base from which progress can be measured and establish a

12. Increases productivity from increased efficiency and effectiveness. 13. Solves major problems.
As I mentioned earlier planning and decision making very important part of any Company. I describe below how to process planning and Decision making of Mobitel(Pvt) Ltd. A frequent complaint about strategic plans is that they are merely to-do lists of what to accomplish over the next few years. Or, others complain that strategic planning never seems to come in handy when the organization is faced with having to make a difficult, major decision. Or, other complains that strategic planning really doesn't help the organization face the future. These complaints arise because organizations fail to conduct a thorough strategic analysis as part of their strategic planning process. Instead, planners decide to plan only from what they know now. Strategic analysis is the heart of the strategic planning process and should not be ignored. Planning starts with a half-day or all-day board retreat and includes introductions by the board chair and/or chief executive, their explanations of the organization's benefits from strategic planning and the organization's commitment to the planning process, the facilitator's overview of the planning process, and the board chairs and/or chief executive’s explanation of who will be involved in the planning process. In the retreat, the organization may then begin the next step in planning, whether this is visiting their mission, vision, values, etc. or identifying current issues and goals to which strategies will need to be developed. Planners are asked to think about strategies before the next meeting. The next meeting focuses on finalizing strategies to deal with each issue. Before the next meeting, a subcommittee is charged to draft the planning document, which includes updated mission, vision, and values, and also finalized strategic issues, goals, strategies. This document is distributed before the next meeting. In the next meeting, planners exchange feedback about the content and format of the planning document. Feedback is incorporated in the document and it is distributed before the next meeting. The next meeting does not require entire attention to the plan.

? Install the MacAfee Virus Guard MacAfee is a trusted virus Guard & I feel that this Virus Guard Suits to the Mobitel. ? Upgrade the SQL 2000 to SQL 2005

SQL Server 2005 (codenamed Yukon), released in October 2005, is the successor to SQL Server 2000. It included native support for managing XML data, in addition to relational data. For this purpose, it defined an xml data type that could be used either as a data type in database columns or as literals in queries. XML columns can be associated with XSD schemas; XML data being stored is verified against the schema. XML is converted to an internal binary data type before being stored in the database. Specialized indexing methods were made available for XML data. XML data is queried using XQuery SQL Server 2005 added some extensions to the T-SQL language to allow embedding XQuery queries in T-SQL. In addition, it also defines a new extension to XQuery, called XML DML, that allows query-based modifications to XML data. SQL Server 2005 also allows a database server to be exposed over web services using TDS packets encapsulated within SOAP (protocol) requests. When the data is accessed over web services, results are returned as XML. For relational data, T-SQL has been augmented with error handling features and support for recursive queries. SQL Server 2005 has also been enhanced with new indexing algorithms and better error recovery systems. Data pages are checksummed for better error resiliency, and optimistic concurrency support has been added for better performance. Permissions and access control have been made more granular and the query processor handles concurrent execution of queries in a more efficient way. Partitions on tables and indexes are supported natively, so scaling out a database onto a cluster is easier. SQL CLR was introduced with SQL Server 2005 to let it integrate with the .NET Framework
Page | 29

SQL Server 2005 introduced "MARS" (Multiple Active Results Sets), a method of allowing usage of database connections for multiple purposes SQL server 2005 has got great functions than the SQL server 2000. ? Installing the Peach Tree Accounting Software for the Accounting purposes

Peachtree Accounting is business management software published by Sage Software and sold primarily in the United States. There have been several generations of software sold under the Peachtree Accounting name. Peachtree Accounting was originally sold by Peachtree Software, a software publisher founded in 1978 by Ben Dyer, Ron Roberts, Steve Mann, and John Hayes. The company was carved out of The Computer SystemCenter, an early Altair dealer founded by Roberts, Mann, Jim Dunion, and Rich Stafford and where Dyer had joined as the manager and where the first software was published in 1977. The company's products were included in the initial launch of the IBM PC, and it was acquired by Management Science American in June 1981. After several subsequent changes of ownership ending with ADP, Peachtree was eventually acquired by the Sage Group in 1998 for USD $145 million. ? Install Windows Server 2008 Instead of the Windows server 2003

Windows Server 2008 is one of Microsoft Windows' server line of operating systems. Released to manufacturing on February 4, 2008, and officially released on February 27, 2008, it is the successor to Windows Server 2003, released nearly five years earlier. A second release, named Windows Server 2008 R2, was released to manufacturing on July 22, 2009.[3] Like Windows Vista and Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 is built on Windows NT 6.x. Windows Server 2008 is built from the same code base as Windows Vista; therefore, it shares much of the same architecture and functionality. Since the code base is common, it automatically comes with most of the technical, security, management and administrative features new to Windows Vista such as the rewritten networking stack (native IPv6, native wireless, speed and security improvements); improved image-based installation, deployment and recovery; improved diagnostics, monitoring, event logging and reporting tools; new security features such as BitLocker and ASLR; improved Windows Firewall with secure default configuration; .NET Framework Foundation, 3.0 technologies, Message specifically Queuing Windows and Communication Workflow

Foundation; and the core kernel, memory and file system improvements. Processors and memory devices are modelled as Plug and Play devices, to allow hot-plugging of these devices. This allows the system resources to be partitioned dynamically using Dynamic Hardware Partitioning; each partition has its own memory, processor and I/O host bridge devices independent of other partitions.
