Create the Business and Life You Want

best-selling author of
Coach Yourself to Success and
The Secret Laws of Attraction
Design Your Ideal Life
• Your work is only one element in an ideal life.
The first step is to design an ideal life and then
create or find the business model that supports
that life.
• Write down your ideal life, draw it, and or make a
collage of pictures you want in your ideal life.
• E.g. The coaching colleague who worked on
Mondays and took the rest of the week off to ski!
The 8 Elements of the Perfect
Work or Business:
1. Abilities/Natural Strengths
2. Skills (learned)
3. Interests
4. Personal Style
5. Family
6. Values
7. Goals
8. Work Development Cycle
Abilities/Strengths
Defn: How your brain is hard-wired up to think and
function from the age of 14 (age 6 for musical
ability). These are your natural strengths.
Resources:
1. The Highlands Ability Battery (the three hour
career version with a two to four hour debrief)
2. Now, Discover Your Strengths (20 min. online
quiz and book)
3. Coach Yourself to Success (Chapter 6 Do
Work You Love with ten exercises/tips)
Discover Your Unique Talent
Interview your friends, family and colleagues:
1. What do you think is my greatest strength?
2. What is my biggest weakness? (Ask this only if you feel up to it, and ask
them to tell you in a constructive way. Do not comment on anything they
say, just write it down. You are simply gathering data/opinions.
3. What do you see as my special talent or gift? What do I do naturally and
effortlessly that is special?
4. If I were on the cover of a magazine, what magazine would it be and
what would the story be about?
5. When a I most fully expressing this gift or talent?
Note: For many people, their natural talent is so much a part of them they take
it for granted. It is like breathing so they don’t even notice it. This is why it
helps to ask those around you what they see is special or unique about
you.

Personal Style
• Are you an introvert, an extrovert or in between?
(Where you get your energy?)
• Do you have a long or a short time frame? Do
you think 5-10 years or more into the future or
can you only imagine the next six months?
• Are you a specialist or a generalist by nature?

and The Highlands Ability Battery
Values/Passions
• What is most important to you? What do you
love to do? If you could imagine waking up and
being able to do anything you wanted, what
would that be? Creating, playing, teaching,
leading, designing, inventing, learning, etc.
There are many different values.
Exercises:
• The Instant Billionaire
• The Highlights of Your Life
• Who do you envy? Not just admire, but envy?
• The Values List
The Instant Billionaire
Imagine you won the lottery and suddenly all
of your financial needs were instantly
taken care of. What would you most want
to do now? Make a list of everything that
comes to mind.
Interests/Goals/Family/Work Cycle
and Practical Considerations
Interests—what interests you? What
magazines do you subscribe to and read?
Goals — financial, health,retirement, travel
Family —supporting children, looking after
aging parents, etc.
Work Development Cycle — E.g. May have
the inherent ability to be an entrepreneur,
but may have a family to support and want
the security of a normal job.
Qualities of an Entrepreneur
• Starters, not finishers
• Optimistic, often to a fault
• Visionary: can imagine the future
• Rebels: prefer to create their own rules and may not
like to follow rules.
• Stubborn and persistent. May be seen as obsessed
with an idea by others.
• Risk-taker. Willing to take risks where others might
not.
• Not always good managers.
• Energetic.
Transition Tips:
Start with small steps in the right direction:
1) Simplify your life.
2) Essential: Create a 2 year reserve of savings or more.
3) Start moonlighting if you want to start your own business. Test
your ideas out first! (Hip Hounds story).
4) Take evening classes in subjects that interests you.
5) Try related volunteer work for the experience and contacts.
6) Get new education or training for your new venture.
7) Sign up for some basic small business courses.
8) Get to know your local Chamber of Commerce.
9) SCORE: Service Corp of Retired Executives.
