Major Players - Present Market Scenario

One company in the forefront of this time-and-labour-compressing food revolution is the Bangalore-based packaged food company MTR Foods Limited, which has launched a host of mouth-watering ready-to-cook and ready-to-serve foods. MTR has been a major player in this market.

The Rs 90-crore turnover company has made its mark in different categories including traditional spices and masalas such as Sambhar, Rasam, Channa powder; Instant Mixes like Rava Idly Mix, Gulab Jamun Mix and last year launched 22 varieties in the RTE segment. “Within one year of launch, we are doing a turnover of Rs 4.5 crore in the domestic and another Rs 4 crore in exports in Ready to Eat foods segment,” says J Suresh, CEO and executive director of MTR.

Another major player is Pune-based “Tasty Bite” which has similar range as MTR. Further in line we have Gits, Al- Kabeer etc, who are all doing well. Even the FMCG ajor like HLL has jumped into the fray with ready-to-eat Chapathis, while Punjab Markfed has plans to export traditional Punjabi dishes to the UK.

In the non-vegetarian segment Venkateshwara Hatcheries is doing quite well with its chicken items and plans to launch a few more, while Punjab-based Chatha Foods has pork items and several chicken dishes in the pipeline.

Corporate sources in ITC say buoyed by the success of Dal Bukhara, ITC's foods division is planning to launch a number of items within the next few months, including a special dal from the famous Dakshin Restaurants, ‘Kundan Kalia’ from Dum Phukt, and other vegetable kormas and non-vegetarian dishes. Kitchen’s of India is the most premium label in the category today. However because of the cost factor it caters more to the higher end segment.

On one hand while players like Wimpy's and Nirulas began to market packaged foods, companies like Dabur Foods have announced plans to get into ethnic foods in a big way. Dabur's product range will include ready mixes as well as packaged food, ready to be put in a microwave or boiled. In the mixes segment, the company has already launched tomato puree under the homemade brand.

Satnam Overseas, the Rs 340-crore rice exporter selling the Kohinoor brand of rice, has re-launched its premix Ready-to-Cook Pulao Rice & Spice in four flavors - Vegetable, Tomato, Masala and Mushroom. It has also launched Parathas and vegetables like Dum Aloo, Palak Paneer, Dal Makhni, Kadhi, Aloo Matar and Rajma.

LT Overseas also has plans to introduce rice in five flavors - Lemon, Masala, Methi, Tomato and Biryani. These will be launched under the Dawaat brand. Other existing players in the segment, like the Pune-based Tasty Bite, have recently launched Pao Bhaji and South Indian snacks, adding to its Palak Paneer and Navrattan Korma menu, while the Bangalore-based MTR Foods has forayed into north Indian cuisine with Kharabath, Biryani Mix and Idly Mix.
