MADMA ENDS !!!

For the first time since its inception, the Xavier Institute of Communications, Mumbai, organized its now annual festival – MADMA – Madness in Mass Communication and Advertising, on the 11th and 12th of February.

Themed as ‘Going Viral’, the two-day weekend riot focused on brilliance bordering on madness in every area of mass communication. Under the guidance of Ms. Margaret DaCosta, Head-of-Department, Advertising and Marketing Communications, and spearheaded by Neetu Mohan, Chairperson of the Organizing Committee behind MADMA, the fest was the outcome of the combined effort of 96 students divided into different teams ranging from administration to marketing to hospitality to Public Relations.

The title sponsor for the event was Rex Straut Jeans, in association with Gyaanexchange.com, which also served as the backbone of the online event ‘Let’s Go Viral’, in which participants were required to upload content that they created and felt would go viral. Entries included videos, images and advertisements. In addition, their stall in the college premises was a hit with those in attendance, with interactive games and activities to offer. Other stalls included those set up by Lip Ice, Octane Deodorant, Reliance 3G, Maybelline, and a food stall by Bong Bong.

The fest saw entries from colleges all over the country, especially in Cinemascope – the Short Film Event – which was judged by Rohit Iyer, Prachi Mokashi, Sarah DaCosta and Onir, director of My Brother Nikhil. Events on the first day included Copy/Art which was judged by Ryan Mendonca of Ogilvy & Mather, and Tapan Mody of Yes Yes, Why Not, Radio Gaga by Suren and Naveen from Radio Mirchi, ending with Junkapella, in which participants were required to make music using everyday objects. This was judged by Luke Kenny, musician, actor and former VJ, who added that he “found the event very innovative and (suggested) that XIC copyright the term Junkapella”.

The second day included events such as Mock It Up, judged by Anuvab Pal, Photo Essay by Santosh Verma and Harpreet Bachher, Treasure Hunt across South Bombay, and Dance, judged by Kainaz Motiwala, who shook a leg herself with some of the students. Agnello Dias (Chairman and Co-Founder, TapRoot), Saurabh Shukla (actor, comedian and film-maker), and Randolph Correia (Pentagram, Shaa’ir and Func) conducted workshops which were attended by several students looking for careers in advertising, film-making, and music.

The fest was attended by actors Ali Zafar and Aditi Rao Hydari who were promoting their upcoming film ‘London, Paris, New York’, and concluded with spectacular performances by the bands Something Relevant and Ashwamedh, and a fashion show by some of the XIC students for Rex Straut Jeans.

Being the very first time, MADMA ‘12 was a reasonably subdued fest, with participation mostly confined to the organized events. However, the students have made way for a new chapter in the XIC diary by starting the tradition of an annual fest called MADMA.
