I've been wondering why I haven't seen the big influx of strawberries in the supermarkets like I usually expect this time of year. The battle with the frost this winter has caused all the berries to ripen at the same time and drop the price so low that some farmers are destroying their crop instead of harvesting it.
What do you think? I can understand where it may be less expensive for the farmer to destroy the crop rather than pay to harvest above what he can sell it for but I don't understand why the farmer wouldn't simply do a pick your own harvest to at least salvage some of the crop. They do that here in Ohio all the time as a regular option of the truck farm.
What about the residents whose houses are now condemned because the growers consumed so much groundwater in a futile attempt to save the crops? Somehow I don't think they are going to get satisfaction from either their insurance company or the grower. Bad situation all around.
