Live-in Couples

Should unmarried couples have to divide their property or compensate each other when they separate? The status quo discourages interdependence: the absence of property rights under the status quo encourages unmarried couples to act as individuals, protecting their own financial interests, rather than supporting each other.

It is unreasonable for the law to expect unmarried couples to plan for when they separate: people within relationships tend to be optimistic about the prospects of their relationships. They do not expect to split up. Making agreements about property at this stage can seem unromantic and unnecessary.

YEAH. THE LAWS OF PROPERTY RIGHT SHOULD BE SET FOR THE UNMARRIED COULPLES OR COUPLES LIVING IN LIVE IN RELATIONSHIP.

BUT THE MATTER IS NOT YET THAT IMPORTANT FOR GOVT INVOLVEMENT. THERE ARE MANY OTHER IMP ISSUES TO DISCUS...

no, unmarried couples need nt need to compensate their property each other that too in today's senario.. where evry1 needs to be independent... this would jst make them dependent nd also in boundations...

When the advocates of live-in relationships demand that legal recognition be given to the status of live-in couples, they should expect the law to treat them just like any other couple in matrimony. Just like in marriage, property rights should follow in live-in relationships as well.

the absence of property rights under the status quo encourages unmarried couples to act as individuals, protecting their own financial interests, rather than supporting each other.

It is to be borne in mind a statutory provision for giving property rights to live-in couples would have a greater chance of being mis-used.

I personally feel that when there are children involved the law should be the same as married couples. Any split should be in the interests of the partner who has custody of the children, to who gets what. The partner who is responsible for the daily care and looking after the children's well being, should be awarded more, as they have more costs and responsibilties -It's the children who will lose out in the long run
