AMET in the name of the university stands for Academy of Maritime Education and the university came into existence in the year 1993. Before it was converted into university, AMET was offering education as Academy of Maritime Education & Training, which was launched in the year 1993 on the 15th of February. The institution began its educational journey with just 14 students and right from its inception, it has been growing considerably and now it has grown as deemed university with a student-strength of nearly 2500 undergoing various PG, UG and diploma courses. The university is dedicated towards maritime and related education. The institute earned the status of deemed university in the year 2007 on the 21st of August and it holds the pride of being the first and only university dedicated for maritime education.


All the courses offered by the AMET University are approved by the UGC and some of the courses are approved by the Directorate General of Shipping as well. Some core departments and some allied departments are functioning under the university to offer courses are different levels of education.
