Through a Legislative Assembly Act, Government of West Bengal has passed an Act in the year 2007 to implement a very long unattended demand of the people in creating West Bengal State University. On 26th of May 2008, 57 colleges belonging to Calcutta University was transferred to West Bengal State University. The university is operating from Berunanpukuria and buses are operated from the University for transportation facility of faculties and students.


The aim of the university is to create the concept of cluster among the affiliated colleges, to motivate spreading of knowledge to ensure better job opportunities to the students, to introduce Ph.D level courses, to promote union between conventional method of education and distance/open University and to broaden the scope to take up to higher education by introducing new courses in professional studies. The university is offering PG courses in history, mathematics, comparative literature, anthropology, Psychology, statistics, Hindi, Physics, physiology, English, computer science, sociology, chemistry and electronics.

Apart from these PG subjects, UG is offered for general physics, general philosophy, fishery, zoology, communicative English, political science, food and nutrition, Botany, geography, economics, Music, Sanskrit and economics. These courses are offered by eight departments belonging to the university and they are department of English, anthropology, commerce and management, Hindi, microbiology, history, zoology and botany.
