LIFE AT MPSTME

When I entered the college campus for the first time, I had great expectations both from myself and the college. The point that those expectations are met or shattered is now completely irrelevant. To me the lifestyle and culture of this college carries more weight.

Life in a B school, it seems, is everything but normal. You experience every possible emotion in one day and that too in its extremities. You are worried, happy, sad, laughing, crying and that too all at the same time. Life at MPSTME, NMIMS Mumbai is no exception.

With dreams in my eyes and a hope in my heart I entered one of the country’s top B school, located in Mumbai- the City of Dreams. Like everyone else I had some expectations about what life would be at MPSTME but what I had not anticipated was how life would change here.

Life has changed in all aspects. Studies that had been defined by learning from textbooks have changed to learning and applying from a case study methodology. Meeting new people and making friends has changed to Networking. One sided lectures have changed to a two way process where everyone is free to express oneself. Learning from peers has increased. Competition has increased. Life seems to be on the fast lane and experience of Mumbai rains hasn't helped either.

Moreover the word B school forces our minds to conjure up an image of a lush green campus with a majestic looking building, badminton courts, all night canteens and hostels in campus. However, my college is nothing like that. We as students crib about this fact continuously. But come to think of it, with or without campus we get quality education, a set of teachers who know the problem we face due to infrastructure constraints and are willing to help us always. We have so many events and activities that keep us on our toes.

Life seems to be a constant chain of activities, events, quizzes, presentations, exams, parties, outings, get-together's etc. And all of us crib about being tired always, being overworked etc. but I don't think that anyone of us would want to trade this life for something more sane because that sanity would now be boring for us and it is this mad rush called life that we enjoy at MPSTME.

This text offers a candid and reflective account of life at MPSTME, NMIMS Mumbai, a top B-school located in the "City of Dreams." The author emphasizes that while initial expectations, whether met or not, are now irrelevant, the unique lifestyle and culture of the college hold significant weight.

The Unconventional B-School Experience

The author describes life in a B-school as "everything but normal," characterized by an extreme range of emotions experienced daily—worry, happiness, sadness, laughter, and tears, often simultaneously. This intense emotional rollercoaster is a defining feature of life at MPSTME.

Upon entering, the author had certain expectations, but the reality of how life would transform was unanticipated. The change is pervasive:

  • Studies: Shifted from traditional textbook learning to an applied case study methodology.
  • Socializing: Evolved from simply making friends to purposeful networking.
  • Lectures: Transformed from one-sided delivery to a two-way, interactive process where students are encouraged to express themselves.
  • Peer Learning: Significantly increased, fostering a highly competitive environment.
  • Pace of Life: Accelerated, feeling like a "fast lane," further intensified by the Mumbai rains.

Redefining the "Campus" Ideal

The author challenges the stereotypical image of a B-school campus—lush green, majestic buildings, sports courts, and all-night canteens and hostels. MPSTME, as depicted, lacks these traditional amenities, a fact students often "crib about."

However, the author quickly pivots to highlight the advantages despite these infrastructure constraints:

  • Quality Education: The core academic offering remains high.
  • Supportive Faculty: Teachers are understanding of the infrastructure challenges and are consistently willing to help students.
  • Vibrant Activities: The college compensates for the lack of a traditional campus with a packed schedule of events and activities that keep students constantly engaged.

Embracing the "Mad Rush"

Ultimately, life at MPSTME is portrayed as a "constant chain of activities," including events, quizzes, presentations, exams, parties, outings, and get-togethers. While students frequently complain about being tired and overworked, the author concludes that they wouldn't trade this "mad rush" for a "more sane" life. The very intensity and perceived "insanity" of the experience have become enjoyable, making sanity seem "boring." This reflects a deep-seated enjoyment of the demanding yet dynamic environment at MPSTME.
