Kmart is a chain of discount department stores in the United States, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Guam. Kmart is the third largest discount store chain in the world, behind Wal-Mart and Target; all three chains were founded in 1962. As of January 30, 2010, Kmart operated a total of 1,327 Kmart stores across 49 states, Guam, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. This store count included 1,361 discount stores. Kmart's world headquarters was located in Troy, Michigan, in a sprawling complex which, since Kmart's relocation to Illinois, has been slated for demolition. However, at this current time, no actual demolition efforts are underway, and the proposed mixed-use complex earmarked for the site, the Pavilions of Troy, has not begun construction due to issues with funding.

In 2009, it generated 51% of its US$258 billion sales in the U.S. from grocery business. It also owns and operates the Sam's Club retail warehouses in North America. Wal-Mart has 8,500 stores in 15 countries, with 55 different names. The company operates under its own name in the United States, including the 50 states.
Getting known of the statistical info for both the companies and getting known that the only competitor to Kmart is Wal-Mart.
It is quite common that every successful company develop strategy specifically for themselves to fight effectively in the market. Things they both specialize in are people capabilities, knowledge, system, tools and processes.
Both the giants avoid locating their products in markets which require new capabilities thus pooling more of resources that fulminates the firm.
It is not just excellent logistics and vendor management that empowers Wal-Mart’s success. There are other important things that cater to the same like their first strategy being catering to consumers with all the lowest prices to customers in almost all the segments may it be durables or electronics etc.
They leverage this strategy with real estate acquisition, supply chain management, data analytics etc
Their marketing mix is managed in such a way that there are no extra costs involved and can leverage them along with the cost advantage. The innovation factor is designed taking into consideration the constraints of the firm.
For Kmart the strategies driven are
Kmart is viewed to be the least successful; it defines itself as mass merchandise company. Kmart is of the opinion that Wal-Mart was the one to abscond the idea from them; they not only robbed the idea but took it new heights. Kmart now requires high sales to boost their performance in the market. The strategy that Kmart has in place views the needs of both customers as wells self. Kmart has not served the market and hence do not possess a clear idea about the same. Without clear strategy to deal the market Kmart won’t achieve success.
