The ubiquitous mobile phone. One can't imagine life without it now. Although there are a few Luddites and non-conformists, most would agree it is a godsend. Some would even go to the extent of saying it's the best thing since sliced bread. While the Karnataka health minister argues that it is a health hazard, the education minister feels cellphones are the root of all distractions. He has even gone a step further and banned it for Plus 2 students on campus.
There have been umpteen claims of the ill-effects of the use of cellphones like impotency, brain damage, effects on the heart and so on. However, none of these claims have been empirically proven. So, it would seem for Basavaraj S Horatti and R Ashok. They want to ban cellphones for kids under 16, but the question is: how?
Cracking the whip on parents too is stretching it a bit far as most of them want their wards to own a cellphone. Its convenience outweighs the perceived risks, they feel.
Is the ban on school children using cellphones justified?
