Is Technology Ruining the Unpredictability of Sports?

Technology has revolutionized sports, bringing with it unprecedented precision, fairness, and fan engagement. From goal-line technology in football to Hawk-Eye in tennis and Decision Review System (DRS) in cricket, technology ensures fewer human errors and more accurate decisions. But amidst all this accuracy, one thing may be at risk — the very unpredictability that makes sports thrilling.

Traditionally, sports thrived on human error and spontaneous drama. An umpire’s missed call or a controversial offside decision could swing a game, leading to debates and memorable moments etched in history. Today, technology erases that chaos. Every millimeter is measured, every move scrutinized, and the “wow” factor of a last-minute twist sometimes feels… automated.

Take football’s VAR (Video Assistant Referee) for example. While its intention is to correct clear mistakes, it often disrupts the rhythm of the game. A last-minute goal, once a source of sheer ecstasy, is now followed by a tense wait as referees analyze frames in slow motion. The emotional rollercoaster gets interrupted, leaving fans more anxious than jubilant.

Similarly, in cricket, the DRS system has made dismissals more “scientific,” but not without controversy. The reliance on algorithms over instinct means legendary umpiring calls are a thing of the past. The beauty of sport — its ability to shock, surprise, and stir raw emotion — sometimes gets lost in the pursuit of perfection.

That said, we can’t deny the positives. Technology has drastically improved fairness and reduced glaring errors. Athletes are monitored with data to prevent injuries, fans enjoy immersive experiences, and analytics deepen understanding. But we must ask — at what cost?

Perhaps the answer lies in balance. Technology should assist, not override, the heart of the game. Let it enhance fairness without sterilizing the spontaneity. After all, sports are not just contests of skill, but theatre — and the best theatre thrives on unpredictability.
