A 20-member team of American Planning Association (APA) from the US went on a tour of the

newly-launched Ahmedabad Janmarg Limited
(AJL)-run BRTS system on Monday.

APA is an independent, not-for-profit educational organisation that provides leadership in the development of communities. Associate director CEPT University and chief planner for BRTS, Shivanand Swami explained the visiting team about BRTS operations.

"The team is here to study the urban transportation system in India. They had heard a lot about AJL, and wanted to take a tour to understand the progress made by Ahmedabad in mass rapid transit system in such a short span," said Swami.

The team has already visited Metro rail in Delhi, Jaipur, and will be going to Mumbai. They also met Municipal Commissioner IP Gautam on Monday. "The success of AJL has created a lot of interest in other countries. Ahmedabad has set an example of urban transport system for other Indian cities. The team was impressed by the progress made by AMC in managing the urban transport," said Gautam.

The team which met AMC officials, included international director and co-ordinator for APA and county of Santa Clara Rob Eastwood, Kate Connar from San Francisco Planning Department, County of Santa Cruz Alice Daily, Hing H Wong from Association of Bay Area Government, Leonard James Miller from San Francisco.

I think India as a country provides a lot of scope for various studies and research. the visit of APA and BRTS success in ahmedabad is one such example... hope more would continue.

no i dont think brts has been succesful because during its trial phases it was crowded but as soon as they have started charging people density have only diminshed and also brts has led to choas of traffic due to lessening the space alloted to two and four wheelers
