FDI is seen as a means to supplement domestic investment for achieving a higher level of economic growth and development.

FDI benefits domestic industry as well as the Indian consumers by providing opportunities for technological up-gradation, access to global managerial skills and practices, optimal utilization of human and natural resources, making Indian industry.

Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) flows are usually preferred over other forms of external finance because they are non-debt creating, non-volatile and their returns depend on the performance of the projects financed by the investors.

FDI also facilitates international trade and transfer of knowledge, skills and technology. In a world of increased competition and rapid technological change, their complimentary and catalytic role can be very valuable.

GDP is the sum of gross value added by all resident producers in the economy plus any product taxes and minus any subsidies not included in the value of the products. It is calculated without making deductions for depreciation of fabricated assets or for depletion and degradation of natural resources.
Due to ownership advantage MNEs invest in foreign countries, for location advantage MNEs locate a foreign plant, and internalization advantage insists any MNE to enter a foreign country.

Location advantage theory stresses on important variables that influence FDI in foreign countries using three main categories: (1) economic factors, (2) social or cultural factors, and (3) the political environment.

Overall, Dunning concludes that foreign countries that attract investments by multinational firms have a large and growing market, a high gross domestic product (GDP), low production costs, and political stability.
 
Foreign direct investment in India is the biggest source for the development of our economy. Companies from the abroad can invest in India and take the benefits of cheaper wages and in return supports the India economy to grow. According to the study, it is predicted that in 2016, India will be the top destination for the Foreign Direct Investment.
