INTRODUCTION
The Internet, sometimes called simply "the Net," is a worldwide system of computer networks - a network of networks in which users at any one computer can, if they have permission, get information from any other computer (and sometimes talk directly to users at other computers). It was conceived by the Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA) of the U.S. government in 1969 and was first known as the ARPA Net. The original aim was to create a network that would allow users of a research computer at one university to be able to "talk to" research computers at other universities. A side benefit of ARPA Net's design was that, because messages could be routed or rerouted in more than one direction, the network could continue to function even if parts of it were destroyed in the event of a military attack or other disaster. It is easy to get the internet and the web confused, but they are not the same thing. The internet is the actual physical network. It is made up of wires, cables, and a satellite being connected to this network is often described as being online. The internet connects millions of computers and resources throughout the world. The web is a multimedia interface to resources available on the internet.

EVOLUTION OF INTERNET
The vast, global internet of today had rather humble origins when it initiated. In 1969, the Department of Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA) developed an experimental network called ARPA net to link together four supercomputing centers for military research. This network had the many and difficult design requirements that it had to be fast, reliable, and capable of withstanding a nuclear bomb destroying any one computer center on the network. From those original four computers, this network evolved into the sprawling network of millions of computers we know today as the internet. The internet itself is really a massive "network of networks." There is no central "Internet, Inc," to which you can connect. Essentially, it is a collection of Internet service providers (ISPs) who each operate their own networks, with their own clients, and agree to interconnect with each other and exchange packets. Many of the large ISPs sell connections to their network to smaller ISPs, some of whom again sell connections to other ISPs. Ultimately, these ISPs at all levels sell connections to individuals and corporations, who then merge their networks (or individual computers) into this larger network called the internet.

While there is no exact governance of the Internet, communication standards and coordination of ISP actions are overseen by a nonprofit organization called the Internet Society. An affiliated organization, the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) coordinates the work of numerous committees that define Internet communication standards and research methods of explaining and improving Internet communication. The actual communication standards are referred to as RFCs (Requests for Comments) and are voluntarily adhered to by all ISPs. Internet uses can be simply categorized as publishing and getting information on various subjects like marketing, management, science, new technologies, training materials, jobs, higher education, mathematics, music, games, software, etc. and E-Commerce And the kind of information available in the internet can also be listed as text documents, graphic files, sound and video files, downloadable games and software, demo games and software, etc. At the speed the internet has been evolving, many predictions can be made about the internet in the future, like main communication method coming with functions of being translated automatically into the language preferred by the receiver, finding a tune through humming into the microphone, virtual tours of a house, car, etc. could become common thing. This is what the Internet has become today, starting from its modest birth in 1969, to become an indispensable service for the human race at present and will remain the same in the future. 9|Page

TYPES OF INTERNET CONNECTIONS
1) DIAL UP CONNECTIONS
Usually in small time organizations and residences the user connects to the internet using telephone lines and 50 kbps modem. This kind of connection is known as Dial-up Connection which uses modem to Dial a telephone number given to you by the Internet Services Provider (VSNL etc.). However, this connection is not permanent. It begins with ISP¶s Server answers the call and ends when the PC hangs UP. However, the biggest drawback of Dial up Connections is the Telephone is simultaneously used with the Internet Connection which will results into heavy Telephone Bills.

2) ISDN (INTEGRATED SERVICES DIGITAL NETWORK)
It is a leased line which provides more bandwidth than compared to the modems discussed above. The ISDN lines provide data transfer rate of 64 kbps or 128 kbps. This helps in faster access of internet and downloads. The ISDN connection is through normal telephones which requires Terminal Adapter.

3) CABLE MODEM:
It is gain rapid attention because of huge bandwidth and data transfer rate of more than 2048 kbps. Apart from this the telephone lines are not engaged therefore the user has to pay only to the ISP (Internet service provides).

4) BROAD BAND CONNECTIONS:
In Local Area Network the computer users share a single Internet connection. However Dial-up Connections will not be able to satisfy such a requirement, therefore many companies have come out with a solution to solve this problem by providing services through cable TV satellite service providers etc. These high speed services are called broad band services. These high speed services are called broad band services. The Broad than a Dial-up connection. Now a day¶s many schools and colleges have opted for Brad Band connections therefore large files and web pages are downloaded quickly. Now a day¶s many users are preferring Broad Band Service as the Services are priced within the reach of many individual.

5) DSNL TECHNOLOGIES (DIGITAL SUBSCRIBER LINE):
It requires special modem to increase data transmission speed more than 500 kbps by using the existing telephone wires. DSL Technologies would help in faster surfing and speed up downloading of files/audio/video etc. Its is much more faster than telephone modems which support transmission speed of not more than 56.6 kbps and 64 or 128 kbps for ISDN Lines. The user has to pay extra for these services.

HOW TO CREATE EMAIL
Electronic mail, commonly called email or e-mail, is a method of exchanging digital messages from an author to one or more recipients. Modern email operates across the Internet or other computer networks. Some early email systems required that the author and the recipient both be online at the same time, a la instant messaging. Today's email systems are based on a storeand-forward model. Email servers accept, forward, deliver and store messages. Neither the users nor their computers are required to be online simultaneously; they need connect only briefly, typically to an email server, for as long as it takes to send or receive messages. An email message consists of three components, the message envelope, the message header, and the message body. The message header contains control information, including, minimally, an originator's email address and one or more recipient addresses. Usually descriptive information is also added, such as a subject header field and a message submission date/time stamp.

Step:1 Left mouse click the icon to open a New Email Window Step:2 Note three main areas first: a place for an email address, 2nd: a place to write a subject of your email and 3rd: an area to place your message, picture, jokes, links to web pages and more. Step:3 Address your mail to a contact last, because that way you can¶t accidentally send it before it¶s finished (it happens with new users).

17 | P a g e

Step:4 Fill in text in the box pertaining to the email theme. You should always put a subject to let the person receiving the email know what is contained in the email you are sending. Step:5 Type in your message into the mail body of the email. The area for typing works just like a Word Processor program. Complete your message and it¶s now ready to address and send (when you learn the basics of email composition, there are countless things you can do when composing and email, like pictures, copy and paste text from the internet or other document, or have fancy background stationery.) Step:6 Type the email address into the box. If the settings are correct, it will auto fill the address with a few keystrokes. A better way is to use the mouse to address emails, but you need to have the addresses in your "Address book". Notice the little book icon just left of the "To" (very small) by the address box. Click on that book icon, and a list of your email addresses will show. Select the email name you want and click the "To:>" to input that email address into a list in the "To" box. If you want to address to more than one contact, repeat as many times as required; each time select the name and then click ³To:>". When all contacts are completed, click . Step:7 Send your email. The left icon is the icon; click on this icon and your mail is on the way to a huge server run by an Internet Service Provider (ISP) somewhere in the world and is ready for your contact to retrieve next time they are using their email program eg. Outlook Express or Hotmail.
