Insight is most happening event @IIMA Says Ameya Kamath

1. How would you describe yourself and your institute?

IIMA as an institute does not require any description. The institute has been consistently ranked as the no.1 B-school in the country for the past several years. The alumni, faculty and students work hard in maintaining the reputation of the institute. As an individual, I am proud to be a part of this. In the past one 1.5 years, I feel that I have gained a lot of experience and knowledge in the institute, which may not have been feasible anywhere else.

2. What are the events at IIM-A? According to you which is the most happening and why?

Insight is one of the most happening events on campus. This event is targeted at B-school students and the local Ahmedabadi junata. On day 1, we will have various events on campus that solicit participation from B-school students from across the country. There are various events such as Wizards of Barter, Social Revelation, Productomania, Bone of Contention and the AC Nielson Market Research Workshop. These events are extremely competitive and are a learning experience for the participants and the audience. Day 2 focuses more on market research through the local people who come down on campus and visit various stalls. Various market research firms come down and tap this opportunity to interact with the consumers.

3. Was IIM-A your dream MBA Institute? What efforts/plans did you have in your mind to achieve it?

Yes, IIMA has always been my dream institute. Before joining a B-school, I wanted to work for a couple of years to get some perspective on how things work in the corporate world. This experience would help me relate to what would be taught here.

4. Would you like to share few tips to crack CAT and GDPI aspirants who also see IIM-A as their dream Institute?

You need to study smart for the CAT. You may be a born genius but without practice you will not get anywhere. You need to practice all 3 subjects, recognize your strengths and weaknesses, and then work on them. For the GDPI, you need to be genuine in what you talk about. You are not selected on the basis of how much you have spoken, rather on the basis of the value that you have added to the discussion.

5. How would you, as an MBA bring about a change in management practices and thoughts over time?

As an MBA, it is extremely critical to stay in touch with the fast changing management practices across the world. As I grow with experience in the corporate world, I would contribute with any unique though processes that I may develop. Feedback on these though processes will surely help me sharpen my thoughts and help me grow further.

6. If you was to choose an Organization of your choice to Work for ____? Which one would it be and Why?

I wish to work for any one of the top 5 management consulting companies. According to me, the most striking aspect of consulting is that we have the opportunity to experience various sectors of business in a relatively short period of time. Another aspect that draws me towards consulting is the unique and challenging situations that we are put in. The consultants areis[/s] expected to answer any queries that the client puts up about his business. This challenge of helping others grow their own business is what fascinates me.

7. What do you feel about the management education in India and abroad? Do you feel there lays the difference if yes then in what ways?

A major difference between management education in India and abroad is that all B-school students need to have atleast 2-3 years of work experience before the MBA course. I believe that this helps students understand the course better. Another difference is that in India, we get an opportunity to study the developing and developed economies. That is not the case in management institutes in US and UK.
