India's 'monster eater' retires

Rappai says he has other things to worry about apart from food

Restaurant owners in the town of Trissur in the Indian state of Kerala can breathe a huge sigh of relief - the "monster eater" is retiring. They can now think again about launching "eat as much as you like" lunches and buffets. That is because Rappai - the man with the giant appetite - has been warned by medics to curb his food intake. In his prime it would have been an under-statement to describe Rappai's appetite as voracious. 'Unlimited meals' This was a man who quite easily could plough his way through two buckets of rice and accompanying chicken and vegetable dishes. For breakfast it was said he could devour 75 idlies (rice cakes) and still have room for more. On one famous occasion, the man who locally became known as Theeta (monster eater) took advantage of a local restaurant's "unlimited meals" coupon. He reputedly scoffed three bucketfuls of rice, one bucket of fish curry and 10 kgs of cooked meat.
The restaurant in question ran out of food, and police had to be called in to restore order as a large crowd gathered to watch Rappai in action. The BBC's Sridevi Pillai in Trivandrum says that such eating extravaganzas became more commonplace as Rappai's fame spread throughout the state. A regular at Kerala's informal eating competitions, Rappai is also credited on one day with ploughing his way through 700 idlies on top of 10 kgs of halwa (an Indian dessert). No wonder then that when hoteliers saw this cheerful man majestically walking around the town - adorned in khaki shirt and white dhoti - they would hastily put up the shutters of their premises and close down. Turn violent But now 64-year-old Rappai's huge appetite has had to be curtailed because he recently developed a severe stomach ache. He was told in no uncertain terms to eat less or face the consequences. "I am diabetic and my body weight was too heavy at around 115kg," he said. "I have decided to listen to the doctors. I think I have lost the power to digest food. My friends, especially my police friends, have advised me to eat more carefully.

My heavy eating days are over, there will be no more competitions for me
end_quote_rb.gif

Rappai refers to his "police friends" for good reason: there were times that hoteliers became so enraged at his capacity to eat huge amounts of food that situations sometimes threatened to turn violent. Police rescued him several times, on occasion even taking him back to the station for a little more food. Today Rappai is resting at his home at Kizhakkumpattukara in Trissur. He says that other things to worry about apart from his stomach. "I have my 90-year-old mother to look after," he says, "and now have to cope with tremendous change in my life. "Gone are the days of unbridled consumption of idlies, halwa and buckets full of boiled rice. "My heavy eating days are over," he says. "There will be no more competitions for me." "Now I only take a bowl of Kanji (rice gruel) for breakfast and a little rice for lunch and dinner. Rappai gives a toothless grin. "Anyway I have lost all my teeth because of over-consumption of sweets."

ALSO DONT B SUCH A 'PESSIMIST' ........... V CAN HARDLY DO ANYTHING FOR THOSE 40% BUT APPRICIATION WILL JUST COST U FEW WORDS.

THIS 1 PERSON CAN ADD 1 MORE INDIAN TO 'GUINESS WORLD RECORD' BUT I DOUBT WHAT NAME IS THIS 40% GOING TO GIVE INDIA.

YES THESE 40% REQUIRE UPLIFTMENT BUT DURING THAT COURSE V SHOULDN'T IGNORE OUTSTANDING POTENTIALS OF FEW PEOPLE.

See, u din't et my point at all...... Tell me first of all, what will such a type of appreciation earn u? another name in the GBWR (Guniess Book..... ) So what? There're tonnes of such people out there..... Ya, u can appreciate such a man who can eat the food of some 10 ppl..... Clear off a restaurant completely...... but what does it do for the others? Nothing.... Rather, the restaurants would increase their prices..... So what kinda appreciation do others get? Nothing......

He eats a lot... ok, that's not something u see every day. But, what u do see is that when he wipes off the complete restaurant, others don't get to eat. The restaurants increase their prices..... and that would be the case in the whole of the area.......

Can u honestly tell me, that is a good thing? If u still think so, i would suggest that u give it a deeper thought.

EVEN U DIN'T ET MY POINT AT ALL.

I DID NOT MEAN U SHOULD APPRICIATE HIM & MOTIVATE HIM TO EAT IN SUCH QUANTITIES RATHER I MEANT V SHOULD APPRICIATE HIS POTENTIAL.

I COMPLETELY AGREE WITH U THAT THAT EATING IN THAT HUGE QUANTITIES IS NOT BENEFICIAL TO ANY1, NEITHER HIM - NOR THE RESTUARNTS - N NOT EVEN TO THE PUBLIC.................BUT U WOULD AGREE THAT THIS CAPABILITY IS RARE.

OK.............FINE.......I AGREE THAT THIS APPRICIATION WILL NOT EARN ANYTHING FOR ANY1 BUT IS THINKING ABOUT 40% DEPRIVED POPULATION GOIN TO EARN U ANYTHING.....:maddy: ......OBVIOUSLY NOTHING........

SEE IF APPRICIATING SUMTHING IS NOT BENFITTING ANY1 THEN IT IS NOT GOIN TO HARM ANY1 EITHER...............AS IT IS HE HAS RETIRED.............I HOPE U R NOT AFRAID THAT HE STARTS EATING AGAIN IN SIMILAR FASHION.

REALLY, I KNOW ITS NOT A GUD THING TO SWEEP OFF ALL THE FOOD IN A RESTUARNT.............ALSO HE IS A THREAT TO THE AREA WHERE HE LIVES...........BUT I JUST WANTED TO APPRICIATE HIS POTENTIAL COZ I FOUND IT INTERESTING & UNIQUE.

THANX

Well Miss....

u are countering ur argument urself as at one point, u call him a threat and yet appreciate his voracious habits. Yea, he may have the potential to eat like hell, but what's the point. It is like a freaking stuff we see once in a blue moon and clap our hands to appreciate it.

You say that "IS THINKING ABOUT 40% DEPRIVED POPULATION GOIN TO EARN U ANYTHING" and that's exactly why i think people don't think about others..... Its not about ME, my dear.... but US

As i already said, that such habits are really nuisance to an already poverty and hunger striken nation like ours and even though, we might feel awww at his unnatural ability, yet it should not be encouraged.

And i do think u too agree with that when u call him a threat

This again contradicts ur above mentioned statements of calling him a "GEM" and requiring attention... although i guess this does require attention, that people should abstain from such habits.

SEE BY SAYING "IS THINKING ABOUT 40% DEPRIVED POPULATION GOIN TO EARN U ANYTHING" I MEANT THAT INSTEAD OF THINKING V SHOULD DO SOMETHING.

N AS FAR AS THE CASE OF THE EATER IS CONCERNED I THINK I MENTIONED EARLIER THAT "I KNOW ITS NOT A GUD THING TO SWEEP OFF ALL THE FOOD IN A RESTUARNT.............ALSO HE IS A THREAT TO THE AREA WHERE HE LIVES...........BUT I JUST WANTED TO APPRICIATE HIS POTENTIAL COZ I FOUND IT INTERESTING & UNIQUE."

ALSO WHEN I SAID HE IS A GEM I MEANT THAT HE HAS THAT NATURAL ABILITY OF DIGESTING & MAINTAINING 115Kgs ................................ALSO WHO WOULD LIKE TO MAKE IT A HABIT......TELL ME?...........................AS U MENTIONED HALF OF THE POPULATION IS UNDER POVERTY, ANOTHER 25% MANAGE TO EARN A LIVING THEMSELVES, AND THOSE WHO CAN AFFORD - HARDLY HAVE TIME FOR SUCH HOBBIES.......

SO I GUESS I HAVE MADE MY STAND CLEAR ..........................EVEN THEN IF U HAVE ANY THOUGHT LEFT WITH U THEN LET ME KNOW.

LoL... interesting discussion to plunge into...

First of all, its the hotels mistake to give coupons of eat as much as you can.

Secondly, if 40 % of people are poor and dont wear clothes, doesnt mean those who can, stop wearing em.

If you eat kaju pista badam and others cant, doesnt mean you dont relish it with your hard earned money.

This guy is not a threat. Why wud hotels increase the cost of food anyway? Jus hav a fixed price meal .

aha!
I see a lot of change and then quoting of ur words, which were probably misleading.... Indeed u cant do anything by just sitting and talking about it.

Two things u need to correct urself..... u see when u call someone a gem it supposed to mean that he has a constrctive talent.... a person eating truck-loads of food is not a gem but just has a god gift. In fact its not even a talent bcoz it is a god-gifted ability. No one, by any means can do so.

This also answers to the latter part of what u called as "hobbies" This is no hobby and no one, even by any chance can make it a hobby. It might be a god-gift (mark the words, gift might not be useful at all times)

So a person can't be a threat and a GEM at the same time.

@kartik - Agree with u that people have the right to enjoy what they earn, but if a person eats everything is it right? I know legally u cant say that he is doing a mistake, bcoz the restaurant is offering free food (or rather eat as much as u can meals) but ethically. Ofcourse, the restaurants would raise their costs bcoz when one guy eats so much, they would have to raise their costs to ensure that they dont go bankrupt or rather close the above-mentioned kind of meals.

My point to both of u is, that even though we enjoy such freakish incidents in our society, it actually isnt good in a poverty stricken country like ours.

Absolutely wrong.

Numero Uno, its the hotels mistake to have such promos. If they cannot afford it, close it.

Secondly, India is poverty stricken, but that does not mean that people who afford it dont eat. Its like saying "YOU LOOSER" to a guy who bought a mercedez benz from his hard earned money.

Suppose, the restaura was having a one pricing strategy. 100 rs per person constant.. unlimited food. Now a person who only has a tea is also charged 100 and the person having a full meal is also charged the same.

Its obvious that the guy is not to be blamed for this.

Your argument is completely biased. The gourment has a ability which not many have and he should be given due credit for that :)

aha... see kartik, ur argument is correct at some places and wrong at others...

Ok, that was incorrect... the hotels open such schemes to get publicity. It is actually present everywhere in Kerala that u can have unlimited amount of meals for a fied price. Now, they epect people with normal diets only.... and this person is clearly an aberration to them.

See its not affording... there are people who dine in 5 stars too and people dine in an ordinary dhaba too. The case here is this ecessively gluttony which leaves nothing for others. Of the top of my head, yahoo provides free emails to everyone, but they do have a spam checking to ensure that robots don't create web accounts. If i apply ur argument, then i would be saying that yahoo can afford any number of members, so why a check? Its bcoz they epect a nominal calculated number and not an aberration.

Right, here i agree that the gourmet has the ability to provide more bcoz some ppl eat less... however, again the condition comes how much? That number will be calculated by the mgmt per person.... isn't it. they epect a nomial, normal eater.... but such schemes can never work if a person eats the food meant for 15 ppl. that's the thing.

The argument is not at all biased, bcoz even though u may think that i am not favouring that man, even though he can legally eat, bcoz i am talking in terms of ethics. Yes, his stomach can afford to eat that much, but again, its not ethical to eat so much.

Any new point?

Wrong Again,

Its still not the fault of that person. Its the management of the restaura who should take all permutations and combinations into account.

Its such a simple argument. Who cares if this guy leaves something for others.
As long as he is paying what he should pay according to the pricing, its no big deal.

If some dumb guy sells a million dollar diamond for 100 rs, its not the mistake of the person who is purchasing it. Its not unethical either. And there is absolutely no point in involving a poor person who cannot buy the diamond because he doesnt have 100 rs in his pocket.

Such a simple case. Hope you agree now , else its jst being stubborn. Ne new perspectives Mr. Gaurav ?

ha ha.... ROTFL....

well kartik sire....
Either u missed that part where i mentioned something called 'Ethics' or u forgot about it while... i have been saying so, that if u go logically, then the guy is not to be blamed... but my perspective has been from ethics, right from post 1....

yep, the guy pays for the food... and he eats as much as he can acc to the hotel policy.... but he is actually not accounted in their scheme... bcoz everyone, think of normal eaters only...

Want a little perspective of what i'm saying.... u go out sampling ur food.. which is totally free... now a guy comes and eats everything saying what the heck... free sample aint it.. but is it right? NO... why? bcoz he is supposed to have only that limited amount of food (or a sample in the example)

this is what i am talking of ethics... and if u still want to keep arguing over it, then don't call me stubborn  :becky:

Wrong.. there is a defination for Sample. Read that.

Also, Read the below quote for your understanding on ethics, seems you missed that..

If some dumb guy sells a million dollar diamond for 100 rs, its not the mistake of the person who is purchasing it. Its not unethical either. And there is absolutely no point in involving a poor person who cannot buy the diamond because he doesnt have 100 rs in his pocket.

See this example doesn't hold as to how our discussion is.... why? bcoz its not about those who can't afford to pay for those meals.... but it will be about the price rise that will be put up when one man eats up everything. Secondly, not to mention the loss the hotel suffers...

I know again u would keep telling me that the hotel should work out this before implementing this scheme, but as i said, it is there for normal ppl not for gluttons. I gave u the yahoo example before.... just bcoz some ppl have the ability to create thousands of accounts, does it mean yahoo stops offering free accounts with hundreds of megs of free space.... That's my point... Think again buddy... logic doesn't work everywhere.

Logic works everywhere..

What normal people ? Management should take care of each and every tiny bit of possibility.

As for yahoo free emails. They earn on every single user for advertisements they get. The more the members, the more they get paid. And if they cant afford it, its obvious they will charge people for it. Whats the point ??

The Hotel should just deal with it, or close the scheme and if it raises the prices, people who cant afford it wont visit it.. as simple as that.

Secondly, you started with the " Poverty stricken " argument.

bcoz its not about those who can't afford to pay for those meals.... but it will be about the price rise that will be put up when one man eats up everything. Secondly, not to mention the loss the hotel suffers...

You stand no chance as far as this discussion goes :)

ok back to the debate...... Logic works everywhere?????? Sorry sire, i beg to differ from that statement.

Right, yahoo does earn from every single member, yet it has a spam control policy.... bcoz it doesn't want that a single person should toy with its server... otherwise, why should it have that robots cant open a yahoo a/c if it wants to provide infinite number of accounts.

Anyways, cutting out from this example, your explanation is based on pure logic... and i am talking from ethics, so it is quite clear that we are not on the same track. As i said earlier, if u talk logically, then offcourse, the man cant be blamed... but ethically, it is incorrect that a single person should eat so much even if he can afford it. So unless, u talk from that point-of-view, it is baseless to debate.

Now, the mgmt does see and keep a check, but for the people with normal diets, as thats what i meant by normal people. Yeah, u can say tht it is their duty and all.... but they're bound to increase their prices to survive, if people like this guy are born. So earlier, the people who could afford that meals, but can't now, due to the price rise, suffer.......

WRONG .. ethically, the man can afford that dish as he pays for it. Ofcourse its ethical to eat as much as he wants, as in the example of the diamond in my previous posts.

if people like this guy are born. So earlier, the people who could afford that meals, but can't now, due to the price rise, suffer.......

The management wont increase the price. They are not dumb. Either they wil set a maximum limit for the price they ask... or they wil close that scheme / promo.
