Indians feel globalisation is good for health: study​

Many Indians believe that globalisation benefits their country and think that international trade is positive for their economy and the environment, according to a new study. But many others in the world felt trade harmed the environment and threatened jobs and wanted to mitigate these effects with environment and labour standards, it said.

Asked whether globalisation and increasing connection of the economy with others around the world were good or bad, Indians by a margin of 54-30% felt it was good by a margin of 54-30%. As many as 64% say international trade is good for the economy and 59% feel it is good for companies.

A majority of 61% of respondents believe that international trade is good for consumers and 54% agree it is good for standard of living. Of the sample, 56 % believe that international trade is good for creating jobs but only 32% hold the opposite view

The survey, the fifth in a series, was carried out by the Chicago Council on Global Affairs and World Public Opinion in cooperation with polling organisations around the World. The same constituted 56% of the world’s population.

On the issue of whether international trade is good for job security, Indians are divided, with 49% saying it is good and 37% considering it bad.

More than 8 in 10 believe that protecting domestic jobs should be an important foreign policy goal. The Indian reaction to whether the country should accept adverse rulings of the WTO is mixed: 37% believe it should comply as a general rule, 29% say it should not and 21% feel it “depends”.
