The Commonwealth is an association of independent sovereign states spread over every continent and ocean. From Africa to Asia, the Paci?c shores to the Caribbean, the Commonwealth’s 2 billion people make up 30% of the world’s population and are of many faiths, races, languages, cultures and traditions. The Commonwealth Games is a unique, world class, multi-sports event which is held once every four years. It is often referred to as the ‘Friendly Games’. The Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) is the organization that is responsible for the direction and control of the Commonwealth Games.

The Commonwealth game for the year 2010 was held in Delhi, India from 3 to 14 October. This is the most expensive Commonwealth games ever. The total budget for the CWG is Rs.11,494 crore (US$2.5 billion). The official mascot for the 2010 Commonwealth Games is Shera, an anthropomorphized tiger. The CWG 2010 was almost a success in spite of the controversies it had before the opening. The common wealth games meant a lot to India on the world stage. GNCTD has allocated a sum of Rs.11.89 billion to upgrade and expand the infrastructure of Delhi. The Indira Gandhi International Airport has witnessed the formation of the longest runway in Asia, 4.43 meters, for double sided landing and takeoff to accommodate the huge air traffic. A six lane national highway NH8 was built for well connectivity with the airport to ensure a better transport for the visitors. It was ensured that there would be 2,000 CCTV cameras operating on the roads besides those inside the competition venues to ensure the safety of the athletes, visitors as well as our own citizens. The highlights of the CWG 2010 for athletes were the games village, free trip to taj, reserved lane for participants, security and pollution free environment. Surprise doping test were also conducted during the games for the athletes.

Initially, there was huge criticism on the games preparation. The common wealth games was criticized and put as jokes in magazines, newspapers, SMS, social networking sites because of the incidents like bridge collapse outside the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium and false ceiling of CWG venue falling. Moreover the visitors from other countries felt dissatisfaction for their CWG village. There was also a small problem in opening ceremony, Prince Charles or Indian President, who shall open the games. Finally authorities made it assured to complete preparation before opening ceremony.

The Opening ceremony: The CWG Opening ceremony evening with grand spectacle of India’s cultural and traditional might on October 3, 2010, silenced all critics who had badly commented the Delhi Commonwealth Games. The concept of the opening ceremony concept was ‘The Wheel of Life”, sending the message that the whole world is one family. At the start of the ceremony, a huge helium balloon lifted up from the center of the jam-packed stadium with colorful puppets dangling from it to welcome the spectators. The aerostat, which is said to be the biggest helium balloon in the world, has a 360-degree projection surface. Prince Charles delivered the Queen’s message and Indian President Pratibha patil delivered her speech. Many cultural and yoga performance was exhibited. The concluding part of the program was a theme song : Jeeyo, Utho, Badho, Jeeto ( Live, Rise, Move and Win ), composed by the Oscar winning A R Rahman.

Events and Medals:71 nations participated at the 2010 Commonwealth Games.17 sports events conducted for the Games.Kabaddi was the demonstration game included in this year. On the opening day itself, Indian archers dominated the games and went for the gold hunt. The Australians were performing exceptionally well in almost all the events. Indians also gave their best ever performance. The host got a promising performance by their athletes especially shooting and wrestling.Several Commonwealth Games records were broken, including two world records. More than 100 records have been broken and most of them came from swimming, weightlifting, cycling and shooting. This is the highest for any common wealth game ever held.

Finally Australia topped the medal tally with 74 gold, 55 silver and 48 bronze with a total of 177 medals. India came second with 38 gold, 27 silver and 36 bronze with a total of 101 medals. England came third and Canada and South Africa took the fourth and fifth positions.

The closing ceremony: The closing ceremony was the crowning glory for the games. It was a night of martial arts, sufi rhythms, Bollywood music, glitzy lights and also 7000 artists performing. Fireworks lent a magical halo to the over two-hour-long closing ceremony at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, as close to 60,000 spectators roared and cheered. Sri Lankan president Mahinda Rajapaksa was the guest of honor, flanked by Indian Vice President Hamid Ansari and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh."Delhi has performed and the overall image of the Games has been extremely positive", declared Commonwealth Games Federation chief Michael Fennell on the last day of the multi-discipline event. This proved the success for the common wealth games 2010. The 20th commonwealth games will be held in Glasgow, the largest city in Scotland from 24 July to 3 August 2014.
