Eventful 1st days play at Karachi (www.cricinfo.com)

After ten days of bat humiliating ball, and not a result in sight, this blue-riband series exploded to life on an enthralling opening day at the National Stadium in Karachi. Irfan Pathan's first-over hat-trick put India in charge, but a glorious counterattacking 113 from Kamran Akmal, ably supported by Abdul Razzaq and Shoaib Akhtar, took Pakistan all the way from 39 for 6 and the depths of despair to the relatively rude health of 245 all out. And the value of those lower-order contributions was underlined when Pakistan's pace attack blew away the Indian top order, with Mohammad Asif producing two magnificent deliveries to account for Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman.

Laxman had accompanied Dravid after Virender Sehwag had spent some time off the field during the Pakistan innings. The new combination didn't click, however, as Dravid was undone by a beautiful delivery that pitched in line and forced him to play. It was Sehwag that emerged then, but after a nonchalant flail for four down to third man, he had no answer to an express delivery from Shoaib that bounced and took the outside edge.

With the crowd pumping up the volume and Shoaib charged up, Tendulkar walked out onto the ground where he had made his debut 16 long years earlier. Moments later, he was fortunate to be still in one piece, as a Shoaib bouncer measured at a fearsome 151 kmph thudded into his helmet. Though Tendulkar brushed it off, Laxman then took it upon himself to see off Shoaib's threat, leaving Tendulkar to clip two boundaries to midwicket off Asif.

Shoaib, who had batted for 107 minutes for his entertaining 45, went off after five blistering quick overs, and Tendulkar greeted Razzaq with two superb fours, a back-foot punch down the ground and a sweetly struck square-drive. The partnership was worth 42, and India were eyeing the comfort of stumps when Asif came up with the ball of the day, one that jagged back appreciably to take Laxman's off stump. Moments later, Pakistan were completely in the ascendancy as Tendulkar misjudged a Razzaq delivery that seamed in a touch. That left Sourav Ganguly - on his way back home after this Test - and Yuvraj Singh to see off a tricky passage of play when another wicket lost could have been potentially fatal to Indian hopes.

It had been all so different in the morning. With a back injury keeping out Inzamam-ul-Haq and the pitch distinctly green, it was a great toss to win for Dravid, and his bowlers didn't let him down. After taking three balls to find his moorings, Pathan produced three magnificent deliveries to have Pakistan reeling. Salman Butt was undone by appreciable away movement, with Dravid taking a low catch at first slip, and Younis Khan and Mohammad Yousuf - with four centuries between them in this series - had no answer to Pathan's stock ball, the one that swings into the right-hander and nips back off the pitch. Younis was plumb in front to a full delivery, while Yousuf played around one that darted back between bat and pad. Suddenly, on a pitch that actually had something for the bowlers, the series had come alive. After the Wanderers in 1999-2000, when Allan Donald and Shaun Pollock reduced England to 2 for 4, no major Test match had produced such a riveting start. Faisal Iqbal, who had the onerous task of replacing Inzamam, made just five before he made the mistake of shouldering arms to a Zaheer delivery that pitched in line, and the sparse crowd was further shell-shocked when Shahid Afridi, who had spanked a magnificent straight-drive earlier in the over, had his leg stump sent cartwheeling by one that nipped back.

While wickets fell like ninepins at the other end, Imran Farhat had refused to take a backward step, straight-driving Zaheer for four and playing a couple of sublime off-drives off Pathan. But when Rudra Pratap came on to bowl, his impetuous streak got the better of him. The wild slash at a ball outside off stump would have been ill-advised in a limited-overs game, but with the team on 39 for 5, it was almost unforgivable.

With the innings in such disarray, Akmal came out to commence the rescue act. He cut the ball with immense power and square-drove beautifully as Pakistan went past their previous lowest total of 53, against Australia in October 2002. Razzaq was an apt foil, with some lovely drives interspersed by both inside and outside edges. He also enjoyed a moment of good fortune when Daryl Harper refused to lift the finger after Zaheer had caught him palpably in front with a ball that shaped back into the pads.

After lunch, with the pitch easing out and positive strokes fetching maximum value, the association between the two men started to get under India's skin. Having saved the Mohali Test for Pakistan last year with an epic final-day partnership, the two unveiled some glorious shots, with Akmal driving Zaheer for three fours in an over. It was left to Rudra Pratap to affect the breakthrough, but Shoaib then came out and showed that there was still life in the tail. India's cause wasn't helped by Dhoni fluffing a stumping when Akmal had made 80, and Anil Kumble's angst was intensified by Shoaib's huge slog-sweep for six over midwicket.

Akmal's classy defiance, punctuated by 18 beautifully struck boundaries, ended with an edge behind to Dhoni, and after Asif had given Rudra Pratap Singh a third wicket, Shoaib's attempt to reach 50 in grand fashion only found Yuvraj. Akmal's century, his fourth in Tests, was one to savour, easily comparable to Adam Gilchrist at his coruscating best in a crisis situation. It may also just have set the stage for a famous triumph.

India 74 for 4 trail Pakistan 245 all out (Akmal 113, Pathan 5-61) by 171 runs

Match seems to be just drifting towards Pakistan.

Pakistan's young guns outperformed India's star-studded tourists to help the hosts seize the advantage in the third and final cricket Test on Monday.

Pakistan ended the second day's play leading by 180 runs with eight wickets in hand and well-placed to call the shots in the series decider at the National stadium.

Seamer Mohammad Asif claimed four wickets and Abdul Razzaq took three as India, replying to Pakistan's first innings total of 245, were bowled out for 238 midway through the afternoon session.

Pakistan ended the day on 173-2 in their second knock following half-centuries from Salman Butt (53) and Imran Farhat (57) during a first-wicket stand of 109.

Both openers fell within the space of 23 runs, but stand-in captain Younis Khan (25 not out) and Mohammad Yousuf (30 not out) ensured Pakistan did not let the initiative slip away.

PAK Lead by 180 runs.

India's seasoned batsmen faced a test of character to save the series after Pakistan took a vice-like grip on the decisive third Test here on Tuesday.

The hosts, led by Faisal Iqbal's maiden century, staged a commanding batting performance on the third day to take their second innings to 511-5 by stumps, an overall lead of 518.

India's star line-up, led by captain Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag, will have to bat out at least five sessions to prevent Pakistan from winning the match and the series after the first two Tests were drawn.

It is an unenviable task even though the National stadium wicket appeared to have eased out from the seaming track that produced 14 wickets on the first day and eight on the second.

The world record for the most successful fourth innings chase in history is 418-7 by the West Indies against Australia in St John's, Antigua in 2003.

Indian coach Greg Chappell said he was backing his team to deliver.

"Winning is possible but very improbable," said the former Australian captain. "However the wicket is still very good for batting and there is no reason why we should not save the game.

"I think we should have scored more on the second day when we got bowled out for 239 in reply to 245 but the wicket is playing better and better now.

"There was hardly any spin or movement today and these are good conditions for batsmen."

The Indians can seek inspiration from their hosts whose first six batsmen scored half-centuries, with Iqbal reaching his hundred in the last over of the day by pulling Anil Kumble for a boundary.

Pakistan 511 for 5 (Iqbal 103*, Younis 77, Yousuf 97, Butt 53, Farhat 57) and 245 lead India 238 by 518 runs

GOD save India !!!!!!

it cudnt hve been wny worse than this for India. today on the 4th day of the final test at Karachi, India faced the worst defeat ever against Pakistan the victory margin being 341 runs.....
Pakistan team led by the MAN OF THE SERIES Younis Khan, was on a roll first with the bat nd thn wid the ball. after scoring a mammoth 599-7 dec, they took early wickets nd ensured tht the visitors wer at the suffrng end....
India wer never in the game aftr they wer chasing a huge 600+ total to chase. wickets started crumbling one aftr the othr. apart frm Yuvraj no one really proved to hve any answer to the pakistani bowlers.......
a dissapointng finish in the end. India lost series 1-0
with the one-dayers comin up, India wil definetely want to take a revenge, but it is not gionna be easy....

but as always BEST OF LUCK INDIA !!!!!! I wil always support India.....no matter wat......

Hmmm Suggestion .... Hw abt keeping the same thead for our one day viewers.. Anyways the title suffices as it being general title India V/s Pakistan - The Battle Begins..!!

Pakistan 311 for 7 (Butt 101, Malik 90) beat India 328 (Tendulkar 100, Pathan 65, Dhoni 68, Naved 4-62) by 7 runs

well not the greatest manner of victory.......but Pakistan beat India by 7 runs in the 1st ODI at Peahawar by the D/L Method bcoz of bad light !!!!!!!

how often do u see bad light stopping play in an ODI....well i shud say BAD LUCK INDIA bcoz just bout nething could hve hppned frm tht stage of the match......

earlier India set up a mammoth total of 329 to chase with the help of century no. 39 for SACHIN TENDULKAR. Dhoni, Irfan nd Yuvraj came good with fast knocks nd some quick hitting.....

Pakistan had their wrk cut out......nd Salman Butt the youngster coming good with his 3rd century taking the game away frm India.....at a particular pt of time it looked as if it was an easy win fr Pakistan....but India fought back in style nd just wen it was 50-50 situation, the play was called off due to bad light...nd the D/L system comin into effet.....

India cruises to an easy victory !!!!!!!!

India 266 for 3 (Yuvraj 82*, Sehwag 67, Dravid 56) beat Pakistan 265 (Malik 95, Younis 81, Pathan 3-43) by 7 wickets

Half centuries by flamboyant batsman Virender Sehwag, skipper Rahul Dravid and southpaw Yuvraj Singh helped India beat Pakistan by seven wickets and square the five-match series 1-all here today.

Set to get 266 for victory, India's champion batsmen Virender Sehwag (67 off 60 balls) and Sachin Tendulkar (42 off 43 balls) gave India a flying start putting 105 off 16.1 overs before both left in quick succession but not before laying a solid foundation which helped Dravid (56), Yuvraj (82 not out off 89 balls eight fours and two sixes) and Mohammad Kaif ( five not out) to finish off the match in 43.1 overs.

Am feeling really happy for India !!!!!!!!!!! Now that almost all players have regained their form, Pakistan is definetely in for trouble in the coming matches.

DHONI ROCKS !!!!!!!!

India 292 for 5 (Tendulkar 95, Yuvraj 79*, Dhoni 72*) beat Pakistan 288 for 8 (Malik 108, Razzaq 64*) by 5 wickets

What a cracker of a match.........
the title says it all DHONI just murdered Pakistan today and led INDIA to another fantastik 5 wicket win. India now ahead 2-1 in the series......

An outstanding 102-run partnership in just 79 balls between Yuvraj Singh and Mahendra Singh Dhoni made light of a difficult target as India romped by five wickets to take a 2-1 lead in the five-match series. Dhoni blasted 72 off 46 balls while Yuvraj controlled the run-chase superbly with an unbeaten 79 as India won with 14 balls to spare.

Not to forget an outsyanding 95 by the Little Master Sachin was gr8 too.....
GOD India just rocks man !!!!!!!1

Though i felt that a major part in both the wins of India was Yuvraj out there and though he hasnt got a man of the match yet .. Well believe would be a front contender for man of the series for sure... ]

WEll me waiting India takin the cup in one dayer'z..!!:)

Yuvi was the one who gave Dhoni very good support......
Yuvraj is definetiely in prime form.....

INDIA WINS SERIES !!!!!!

India came up with a stupendous perfrmance today beating Pakistan convincingly again.....and whats more - India has won the Hutch Cup with 1 more match to go.....

India started of very well by reducing Pakistan to 38-4 at one stage. Inzi and Yousuf gave a bit of a stability but it was not at all enough. Pakistan finally being reduced to 161 all out in less than 42 overs.....

With such a low total to defend, India started of rathar shakily with Sachin out on a duck !!! But it was Rahuls day today with a wonderful 56, he saw to it India won without any problems....

Yuvraj again looked very good today, he and Suresh Raina the youngster finally contributing significantly toweards India's win. What an amazing little innings by Raina it was..am mighty impressed by his shot selection and elegance.....He was amazing....India now lead series 3-1.

Sinply outstanding all round performance by INDIA !!!!!!
with 1 match to go, India can now experiment and try and give some others a chance to show their talent.

Finally we have taken revenge of the test series loss......
INDIAAAAAAAA INDIAAAAAAAA !!!!!!!!!!!

The Battle Ends !!!!!!

The 60 days long Indian tour of Pakistan now has ended. India being on a high after defeating Pakistan in the one-day series.

There have been notable changes in the players performances and also their rewards. Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Yuvraj Singh, the architects of India's ODI series win in Pakistan, have made it to the top ten in the latest ICC rankings for ODI batsmen.

Dravid - series average - 41 - current ICC rankings - 10

Team India - current ICC ODI rankings - 4
Pakistan, meanwhile, has slipped to No. 5

A win in the forthcoming ODI series against England in March-April could propel India to second place.
