IITians ready to take rural India into cyberspace

AHMEDABAD: A gadget being developed by professors at the Indian Institute of Technology-Mumbai for telephone company Motorola, promises to usher in a rural revolution.

If what is being talked about comes true, sugarcane farmers in villages of UP, and cotton growers in Gujarat, could be reading newspapers on this gadget and find out the market price for the commodities they trade.

What’s more. The device could add up as a telephone set, helping access voice and data calls, as well as provide internet connectivity to access mail.

“This device is mainly for the rural markets. A single device will act as an instrument with which one can receive and make calls, check mails and data such as prices of different products, read the daily newspapers,” a professor from IIT-Mumbai told ET.

He did not share product specifications, but confirmed that the product would be made affordable to the rural consumer. A lot of research is being conducted by leading communication companies to develop such innovative products for untapped markets.

Globally, the research team at Microsoft is also working on a similar product. “We are conducting research in villages in Western India. Most of the communication devices are not necessarily devised for the rural markets. So, this will serve them and later it can be diversified for different markets,” the IIT professor said.
