Advantage IIT -
The Vishwakarma Bhavan, within the IIT Delhi campus, houses the
Department of Management Studies (DMS). With 5 lecture theatres, an auditorium that seats more than 120 people, syndicate rooms, a library, seminar hall, cafeteria and computing facilities, DMS offers all that is needed for management education. A student studying here reaps the benefit of being
part of the best-equipped educational institution in the country. In short, DMS
offers the ‘IIT advantage.’

Courses offered -
The Department of Management Studies at IIT Delhi offers three MBA
courses, each having a different focus.
These include A full-time, two year MBA with a focus on Management Systems (60
seats); Department of Management Studies - IIT Delhi

Developing a broader vision -

Tripti Vyas -
The IITs are so strongly associated with technical education in India that it is often forgotten that they have a fairly strong presence in management education too. At IIT Delhi, management education goes back to 1976, with the “School
of Systems and Management Studies” offering an MTech degree. The school evolved over time to become a fullfledged department in 1993. Finally, in 1997, the
Postgraduate programme in management came to be called the MBA programme. A full-time, two year MBA with a focus on Telecommunication Systems
Management (10 seats); A part-time, three-year MBA with a
focus on Technology Management (60 seats).
The full time MBA emphasizes development of analytical skills and
creative thinking and aims to develop holistic managers who can comfortably
adapt to changing business requirements. Students can
specialise in major streams like Finance, Marketing,
Strategy, HR or Organisation Management and Operations
Management. The full-time programme in Telecom Systems Management prepares
managers specifically for the telecom sector. The programme benefits from
inputs offered by the Bharti School of Telecom Technology and Management
(BSTTM) on the IIT Delhi Campus. The part-time programme is for
working executives. It is designed to develop managers who can effectively
contribute to the evolving core competencies in Indian Industry.
Executives from reputed firms like Alcatel, Adobe, Siemens and CMC have
joined this course in the past. Being part of IIT Delhi, it is but
natural for DMS to lay emphasis on Doctoral Studies.

Dr. Surendra Yadav HOD, DMS observes, “ Research in management in India is not so evolved; it is because of the IIT environment that we are able to create research.” To be accepted as a full-time PhD scholar you
need to go through a personalinterview with the
department. Once accepted, a stipend is paid to a full-time
researcher. The research scope at IIT D is very vast as
the full time faculty here is also strongly research
oriented. It can in fact be said Dr. Surendra Yadav HoD, Department
of Management Studies

Institute Watch that research is given the highest importance at DMS. A part-time PhD is also offered to interested working
executives.

Selection Criteria-
There is a popular perception that the Management Departments at IIT
accept only BTech degree holders. The fact is that any student with a BTech,
MCA, MSc or an MA in Economics can take the Joint Management Entrance
Test (JMET). The score at the JMET, followed by performance in the group
discussion and personal interview, determines final selection. Dr Yadav
points out, “Given the emphasis on quantitative questions at the JMET, a
large number of students who get selected are engineers.” DMS is as
competitive as it is selective. Three students from a hundred applicants may
finally make the grade. Adds Dr Yadav, “We keep a cut-off at higher levels; we
are not number- oriented and we believe in imparting quality education.” This
quality consciousness translates into the fact that the department may choose
not to fill up all the seats available if they do not get suitable candidates.
So, apart from a good score at the JMET and excellence in the group
discussion and the personal interview, what else does DMS look for in its
students? “The qualities we look for in a student are honesty, transparency,
accountability and an ability to look at the totality of things. These become
essential because we lay emphasis developing values and skills in corporate
governance,” asserts Dr Yadav.

Pedagogy -
Since DMS endorses the systems approach to management, emphasis is
first laid on strengthening concepts and only then does attention shift to their
application. Case studies are a very important component of the entire
learning process. The two-year course work is demanding with continuous
evaluation of students through assignments, tutorials and class
participation. For every module, a student needs to write a term paper. By
the end of a two-year programme, each student would have written at least 20
term papers. The faculty at DMS has a very strong research base. Dr Yadav himself has published more than fifty research papers and presented more than thirty papers in conferences. This is in addition to the nine books that he has published in different areas of management. This strong component of research ensures that knowledge is regularly updated and students are aware of the latest developments in their field of knowledge. The strong academic orientation does not preclude involvement with the industry, though. The system enables
regular interaction with industry and connects students with the
ground realities of everyday management. To strengthen
this aspect of the learning process, DMS has the Rostrum - a monthly seminar
series, in which, each session focuses on one functional
area of management.

Speakers from the industry participate in interactive sessions with students and discuss in detail the issue in focus. In a typical year, there would be a session on Strategy, Marketing, HR, Media and Communication etc. Apart
from the Rostrum, “Building India Inc” is an annual seminar series organised by
the DMS. This seminar brings together representatives from the government,
the corporate world and academia to discuss challenges facing the nation.
The event engages participation from leading institutions and corporates and
is organised by the students of DMS as a part of their Industrial Interaction
Committee activities. Placements For the full-time MBA programme, DMS provides assistance to students by inviting corporates to conduct oncampus placements. So far, the department has achieved 100 percent placement. Quips Dr Yadav, “Our placement week becomes a placement day or even placement hours,” as students get offers on the first day itself. He emphasizes that for most students the profile of the company is a more important criterion than the
Know about The Top E-Schools salaries offered. The average salary offered in the placement week in 2004 was Rs 5.58 lakhs, while the highest for the same year was Rs 8.5 lakhs.

Summer placements are also animportant component of studying at DMS. To develop an understanding of the industry, students have to undergo eight to ten weeks of training after their second semester studies. Companies like TCS, Accenture, ICICI, Wipro, SBI, Infosys, Aventis, HLL have been some of the recruiters for final placements as well as summers. The Department, though satisfied with its placement record, does not believe that it should be the only yardstick to judge the effectiveness of the programme. Dr Yadav indicates that they would want students at DMS to “have a broader vision of life,” and that they should learn to look beyond placements.

Student Activities -
No management course is complete without the active participation of students. Students learn to manage time, resources, events at their management school and the lessons they learn are then applied to real-life situations. The Management Systems Society (MSS) is the central body of students responsible for various student activities. Other committees like TECHCOM, which manages the institution’s website, PLACECOM, which looks into placements and the Media Cell make a student feel like a part of the institution. Activities undertaken as members of these committees help develop their managerial skills. The entire DMS experience is best summed up by Divyanshu Srivastava who is doing his second year in Management Systems: “ Studying at DMS is a great chance to experience IIT at a more mature level. Precision Management is what we learn here; we learn to leverage our precision skills into management.”

Annapurna Alladi, a second year student in Management Systems, says of the faculty, “ They are leaders of thought in management education.”
