The Common Admission Test (CAT) has yet again given the IIMs a cause for concern.
Though the examination has managed to regain most of its credibility after a successful run last year, almost 60 management institutes, intriguingly, have chosen to not register for CAT 2011. The IIMs are now keen to assess why.

This year, 145 business schools (excluding 13 IIMs) will consider CAT 2011 score for admitting students.

Though the total number is not too different from last year, what has turned out to be a cause of concern for the organisers of this test is that 58 institutes, which were registered with CAT last year, have dropped out.

"Institutes leaving or joining CAT is nothing unusual. Though our core group of institutes is still with us, we have noticed that a large number from last year's list is missing," said Jankiraman Moorthy, CAT 2011 convenor and faculty member of IIM-Calcutta.

Some of the prominent Bschools which have dropped out include Fostima Business School (New Delhi), Institute of Management and Development (Delhi), J.K. Padampat Singhania Institute of Management and Technology (Gurgaon).

Moorthy, however, dismissed the 2009 debacle as a reason for this. In 2009, CAT switched from the pen-and-paper-based format to a computer-based format. But that turned out to be a disaster as it was riddled with technical glitches which forced the IIMs to reconduct the test.

Over 60 institutes will not consider CAT score.
