IEDC-Bled School of Management

About IEDC

Founded in 1986, the IEDC-Bled School of Management in Bled, Slovenia, was one of the first management schools of Central and Eastern Europe. Over the years, it has offered more than 900 management and executive education programs to business people from more than 70 countries. The school accepts about 3,000 students a year, 70% of whom come from countries other than Slovenia.

A word from the President

An outstanding teaching institution, it provides learning with the world’s best professors teamed with top regional experts, and develops managers with the highest professional and ethical standards. IEDC combines high academic and professional excellence, innovative research, and intellectual curiosity of the professors, as well as the ability to communicate effectively with business leaders, which results in mutual support and synergy.

In addition to three executive MBA programs, IEDC offers MSc in Management, tailor-made programs for companies and other organizations, customized short seminars for executives and a range of general management programs, including an international summer school for young managers. In 1999, it received International Quality Accreditation status from the Central and East European Management Development Association, an international accreditation body, while in 2005 it received an international accreditation by the Association of MBAs (AMBA).

IEDC's location facilitates an easy exchange of knowledge and experience amongst business leaders and managers from differing cultural and economic systems. State-of-the-art facilities provide a comfortable and stimulating learning environment and encourage an ongoing exchange of ideas. IEDC houses its own art collection, regularly invites guest lecturers from society at large, and has been continually developing a creative environment.

IEDC–Bled School of Management is also the headquarters of CEEMAN (Central and East European Management Development Association), IMTA (International Management Teachers Academy), ELC (European Leadership Centre) as well as of the Slovene branch of the United Nations Global Compact.

Why Choose IEDC
"The IEDC EMBA is world-class in all respects. A class of outstanding participants of just the right size facilitates efficient interaction with professors and within the group. Hard work in a beautiful, stimulating environment and unforgettable friendships are other distinctions of the IEDC EMBA, which will forever remain in our memories. Although it was exhausting sometimes, I can say that I have never regretted a single moment I spent in the school."

Miloš Ebner, Trimo, Slovenia (EMBA 2002)

In all its professional, business and corporate citizenship activities, IEDC is an outstanding teaching institution, providing learning with the world’s best professors teamed with top regional experts. IEDC develops managers with the highest of professional and ethical standards.
In short, IEDC:
puts service first and permanently seeks academic excellence, innovative research, and the highest quality of diagnostic services;
encourages teamwork and mutual cooperation across disciplinary, departmental, institutional, and national boundaries;
acts both as an agent of change and as a learning partner;
promotes business as activity based on a broader humanistic texture, like arts and culture, thus giving additional meaning to management;
respects and incorporates the basic values of our civilization, such as dignity, freedom, participation, solidarity, and subsidiarity.
Why choose IEDC?
Outstanding teaching with world class professors
IEDC has proven its ability to find and engage world class professors for its activities, not only with an ever-increasing number and quality of core visiting professors, but also with its own permanent faculty. Statements from participants and corporate clients confirm that the excellence of the professors has resulted in excellent teaching and overall program quality, individual attention and excellent service; excellent teaching material, practical exercises, very interactive teaching, group work, project work discussions are all utilized.
Strong international orientation
IEDC is an internationally renowned business school with a well-established reputation for creating active and diverse groups of participants, which bring together various cultural, academic, and career interests. About 70% of the participants come from over 50 countries, a percentage reached by only a few schools in Europe and far above any other in the CEE region. Programs are deliberately structured to allow participants to experience the benefits, which derive from learning and studying with individuals from many different backgrounds and interests.
Flexibility and immediate transfer of knowledge into practice
The IEDC executive programs are designed for practicing managers, providing them access to real project work and case studies. In order to allow participants to keep their jobs and immediately implement their newly acquired skills, the longer programs, such as the one- and two-year Executive MBA programs and the General Management Program, consist of a number of residential weeks, divided into separate modules. Moreover, IEDC’s three-year Presidents’ MBA program allows participants to spread out their studies over three years and to follow more individually customized schedules; the program is split up in shorter modules, which means minimal disruption for daily work.
Agent of change and an important business meeting point
IEDC has already gone much beyond the role of the traditional educational institution. It has introduced the very concept of contemporary management to the CEE region and played a visible role in casting management into an esteemed profession. Institutionally and through the activity of its key people, it has influenced the behavior of governments, powerbrokers, and business leaders. Its connection with numerous business professionals, distinguished artists, educators, medical experts, and other accomplished individuals who set the societal scene in their countries, is compliant with the school’s mission and value system.
Widespread Alumni network
IEDC is working for you even when you finish your program: the Alumni Office will keep you up to date with IEDC news, help you set up regional Alumni chapters, and organize reunions. Currently we have chapters in eight countries, and they will be more than happy to receive information about your activities and plans. Like thousands of others already do, IEDC alumni are more than welcome to visit us anytime, just to meet old friends, admire the IEDC art collection, or participate in another program.
Stimulating and creative learning environment
IEDC learning environment is designed to be creative, friendly, and flexible. Participants have a chance to use excellent facilities: from state-of-the-art computer equipment to the well-stocked library. The art collection with more than 200 paintings and sculptures, and its program of guest lectures make IEDC a unique place of inspiration: a creative environment for creative leadership.

Place for reflection and innovative learning
IEDC’s beautifully sited and designed campus overlooks breathtaking scenes of the Alpine lake Bled, the oldest tourist resort in Slovenia. The peaceful and friendly green surroundings of the lake, close to industrial centers of Slovenia, Italy, Austria, and Southern Germany, are perfectly suited to the activities of a business school. The participants are able to concentrate on developing and improving their management knowledge, skills, and values, while also taking advantage of the various benefits and facilities that such a location has to offer.

IEDC-Bled School of Management is a unique place to learn, reflect and to meet other managers and leaders; since 2000, when it moved to its current location, it is known as one of the most attractive management institutions in the Region.

The modern buildings, designed by a renowned Slovene architect, Mr. Vojteh Ravnikar, overlook breathtaking scenes of the Alpine lake Bled and are surrounded by an international sculpture park, stimulating staff, participants and visitors to think and act creatively and innovatively.

The complex of two buildings features modern amphitheatres, seminar rooms and a library, which are equipped to receive audio, video and electronic data, including wireless computer access.

IEDC has extensive computing facilities for use by participants and staff for learning and teaching; they can connect laptop computers directly to the IEDC server and the internet.

What topics does the Executive MBA cover?
The IEDC Executive MBA program, which is taught in English, covers the main functional areas of management and demonstrates how these interrelate. With its emphasis on strategic management, its balance between knowledge acquisition and skills development, and its environment of reflection and creativity, the program is well suited to those developing or aspiring to an international career, providing the capability to anticipate and react swiftly to the challenges set by an increasingly competitive business environment. Knowledge acquisition is balanced by the development of management skills. Corporate consulting projects aimed at producing tangible results offer participants an unrivalled learning experience.

How will an IEDC Executive MBA degree affect my career?
An IEDC Executive MBA degree provides you with the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary for success in your professional career. From our experience, participants opt for an IEDC MBA program to structure and consolidate their understanding of business, to develop their analytical capabilities and strategic thinking, to strengthen their skills, and to become better managers. At the same time, the Executive MBA will allow participants to identify and further develop their leadership competences and gain additional self-confidence The IEDC Executive MBA program finally helps those seeking greater management responsibility and leadership challenges to move from functional management to general management.

What is in it for my company?
Joining one of the IEDC Executive MBA programs is not just an investment in you and your career. It is also an investment in your company and its competitive viability. How well a company does is largely determined by the effectiveness of its managers. Your company can gain a competitive advantage by having well-trained executives who have a structured approach to doing business, a broad horizon, the skills and knowledge necessary to manage and lead growth and change, and the capability to successfully face global competitive challenges.

Sending you to an IEDC Executive MBA program can give your company exactly that — a manager with a structured approach to doing business, a broader horizon, and the skills and knowledge necessary to manage and lead growth and change.

Is the IEDC Executive MBA program my best choice?
Yes. Taking an integrated approach to management issues, the IEDC Executive MBA program does not only focus on the individual functional areas, such as marketing, finance, accounting, human resource management, and operations management, but also emphasizes how these areas interrelate and fit together. Problems and issues in all of these, even the functional ones, are not only analyzed according to a narrow functional approach but also from the broader view of general management. This will give you, as a mobile and internationally oriented executive, the capability to anticipate and react swiftly to the challenges set by an increasingly competitive business environment.

Is the IEDC Executive MBA pragmatic and result-oriented?
Yes. This is demonstrated, on the one hand, by its interactive, case-based teaching method and simulations and, on the other, by its hands-on consultancy project work. As a consultant to the top management of selected organizations, you will work on strategic issues; you will build on the concepts you have learned in class context and develop creative, applicable solutions of real value to the hosting organizations.

Paying equal attention to knowledge, skills and attitudes, the program goes beyond the management basics and strengthens your ability to provide effective leadership, work in teams, make powerful presentations, communicate with peers and clients, and manage your time — in recognition of the fact that not only expertise but also personal and interpersonal skills contribute to your success as a manager.

What are the IEDC professors like?
You will be working with international professors and with successful business leaders active in the international business community. What are the main advantages of the modular system?
The modular system enables you to fully concentrate on your studies while being on module, and on your job in the period in between the modules. Moreover, the alternation of work and study allows you to immediately apply the recently acquired knowledge and skills to your job and enables your company to reap the benefits of their investment in you.

Are the IEDC Executive MBA programs truly international?
Since 1991, almost 1000 managers from 40 countries have been represented in IEDC’s Executive MBA programs.

The IEDC Executive MBA programs bring together an international group of 50-60 managers from different cultures who are talented and highly motivated professionals from a rich variety of industries and sectors. Participants are thus exposed to the experiences and views of executives from a vast array of backgrounds, allowing them to also expand their professional network.

In a fast-changing and increasingly global business environment, professional and corporate successes depend increasingly on a manager’s ability to cross cultural barriers. IEDC will help you develop into a manager capable of assuming leadership roles in a multi-cultural corporate setting and international business environment.
What is the difference between the traditional MBA and the IEDC Executive MBA?
Like the traditional MBA, the IEDC Executive MBA program covers the functional areas of management, such as accounting, finance, marketing and strategic management. However, with participants having a greater work experience than is normally the case in the traditional MBA program, the exchanges of experiences amongst peers add an additional flavor to the Executive MBA courses.

The typical one- and two-year Executive MBA student, ranging in age from 28 to 40 years, has 5 to 10 years of business experience, completed an undergraduate degree, and holds a management or executive position. The average age of the Presidents’ MBA participant is 39 and on average has 13 years of working experience.

In contrast to a full-time MBA student, a participant in an IEDC Executive MBA program can continue working while studying, enabling the participant not only to relate the course work with past experiences and day-to-day work, but also to bring the newly acquired knowledge and skills immediately into practice.
Should I choose a one-year or two-year Executive MBA, or the three-year PMBA?
The one-year Executive MBA is a professional degree program designed for practicing managers with the potential to assume positions of greater responsibility in their firms. It is spread over one year and is organized into four modules, three lasting five weeks and one two weeks (seventeen weeks in total).

The two-year Executive MBA program has the same high level of instruction as the one-year program, but is scheduled to be more feasible for managers unable to leave work for the more intensive one-year program. It is organized in seven modules lasting two to three weeks each.

The Presidents’ MBA is designed for top executives. It uses the same rigorous academic approach, coverage and practical relevance as the one- and two-year programs, but flexibility in the completion of the modules accommodates the time constraints of top executives and makes it possible to complete the degree with minimal interruption to work and personal life. The schedule is individually defined.

How can I finance the IEDC Executive MBA program?
The majority of Executive MBA participants are sponsored fully, or in part, by their companies. Presidents' MBA participants are normally sponsored fully by their companies. Participants who are not sponsored by their companies often qualify for loans or they pay the tuition fee by installments. If you are interested to apply for a loan, please contact the EMBA Office for further details.

When should I apply for the IEDC Executive MBA program?
Due to a high interest for the IEDC one- and two-year Executive MBA program, it is important that you apply early. Please start the application process as soon as you and your company are determined about your participation in the program.

Applying for the Presidents' MBA program can be done at any point during the year.
