This is one major question which keeps toiling around in your brain during the first two semesters. Most prominently for the ones who gave it a thought before opting for MBA.

Specialization in Marketing, Finance, Operations and HR is the most popular and familiar amongst students. But folks an organization doesn't hires you coz you have completed specialization in a particular subject, that is just one factor. Mostly their consideration and preference is MBA students coz an MBA degree holders generally have better leadership and communication skills which are important in managerial position. MBA programs also prepare students to have the ability to think analytically and strategically. If you have this two attributes well instilled in you then you can conviently move to the senior positions in the company without opting for an MBA program.

But if you decided to take the specialization route then you need to make sure 2 things:

1) That the school is well ranked for that specialization.
2) Different Specialization have different ranking, so research well with the employers.

The most important consideration remains the same, what are your attributes and interests, that determines the selection of specialization. Coz you can give your best only if you like doing it.:SugarwareZ-221:

from my experience of btech its better to go with the specialisation in which ur institute is good at....
else urs summers will automatically decide

thnx iam ryt nw quite confused as to which field i shld choose...

seniors suggest jz go with the flow than deciding nw

Dear Arshi,

Its not advisable to wait and watch...to decide ur specialization. Start exploring the opportunities in the market( research job option in various verticals ).

Analyze ur capabilities....think long term and since you are from MET...get the details from ur placement cell for the past placement performance.

C which categories of industries are more seen at ur campus...and likewise work upon it.

Make a choice by urself....u know urself well then ur seniors...learn from their experience...dont rely on them for making decisions.

All d best...would love to discuss over this further.

opps...seemes to be an interestin one... but y dont you mention industry rating of spelization or their criteria of ranking based on their process..

finance is gudd for those people who are interested in number crunching and want to study a lot.

marketing is gudd for those, who like to talk a lot and are confident.

dear Arshi,

I'd suggest u not to go with the flow.. create a niche for yourself.. agreed its wise to take a specialization that is well recognized in your institute but what counts the most is choose the one which you like and suits you.. no doubt the best specialization in ur coll can fetch u a job but what takes u a long way in ur career is ur interest.. so i'd really prefer u to choose an elective based on ur liking and interests.. don go wit the flow try against it.. only then ul be recognised..all the best

Hi my name is Vikram,
Is operations suited only for engineers or a science grad like me can also opt for it

i am agreed with black phoenix. more than anything else it's the candidate's interest in that particular area which matters

hi,
if ur background is commerce n u r gud at dng accounts den better go 4 finance n
if ur 4m other backgrounds n u want to know more abt market nd its components n want to settle in it den opt 4 it........

JUST ADDING ON, APART FROM THE INTEREST ONE THING THAT MATTERS A LITTLE IS ALSO THE COLLEGE YOU ARE IN, LIKE SOME COLLEGES ARE REALLY GOOD IN SOME FIELDS AND STREAMS, SO BETTER GO WITH THAT STREAM....
