How Advertising Made the World Go Round

The impact of advertising and marketing created social and economic evolution in societies across the globe. The influence created by PR agencies and other advertising bodies have long dictated trends - what's in and what's not, who's hot and who's not. Notable marketing campaigns are etched in history and may be considered as game changers not only in the world of advertising but also in culture.

Volkswagen: Think Small[/b]

This campaign is considered by many as the golden standard for advertising and its effect in American culture was so epic, the US TV series Mad Men (a story based on the advertising world) paid homage to it in one of its episodes. It was the most talked about campaign in the 60's created by the Doyle Dane & Bernbach advertising firm. What makes this ad genius was the fact that it changed the way how it bent the American preference from buying big cars to purchasing smaller automobiles. Simply enough, the print ad's sparse layout and dry humor catapulted the Beetle as one of the world's best-selling car models.

Nike: Just Do It[/b]

There is no other tagline from a sports brand company as transcendent as Nike's "Just Do It". It was the 1980's and Reebok was ahead of Nike in terms of sale and brand. But Nike quickly latched on to the emerging fitness craze and identified the huge potential of this market. Nike released its "Just Do It" campaign which, in a nutshell, was a positive reinforcement to people who were exercising. The line hit a nerve in consumers everywhere and their sales went up from USD$800 million to an astonishing USD$9.2 billion. Nike connected with their consumers at an emotional level and gained more and more loyal customers after its brilliant campaign.

Marlboro: Marlboro Man[/b]

One of the most masculine ad campaigns the world has witnessed is Marlboro's usage of the iconic Marlboro Man from the 50's until the 90's. It's long been ingrained in cigarette smokers that Marlboro is a manly man's product but Philip Morris & Co. initially introduced its popular filtered cigarettes in the 20's for women only. The tobacco company had to reinvent its brand to compete with Camel, which at the time was the leading industry competitor. Lo and behold, Marlboro infused the Marlboro Man in its campaigns which all of a sudden symbolized the ideal lifestyle men could have by buying their product.

There are many other campaigns out there which shaped and re-shaped advertising strategies over time. What do you think are the best ad campaigns are?
