“Looking For Real Growth – What the UK Can Learn From Doing Business in the Islamic Countries
of the Gulf Cooperation Council in the Middle East”
This master class will explain some basic concepts of Islamic Finance and then look to highlight business
culture in the Middle East, most especially Saudi Arabia. The lecture will contrast this approach with UK
practice and look for both similarities and lessons between the cultures. The lecture will seek to both:-
? Give some background understanding on how GCC business practice works
? Seek to identify issues in the UK that can either be corrected or managed to help business access
commercial funding to develop businesses into new markets and products.
Richard has operated at very senior levels in global business for many years.
Currently based in Riyadh Saudi Arabia as Senior Adviser to one of the most powerful investors in the
Arabian Gulf. He specialises in identifying opportunities to build long term business successes.
With a deep belief in the importance of strategic marketing to ensure long term success through continual
planned product and market innovation commercially he has led several substantial turnarounds. His sector
experience includes Medical Devices, High Technology, E Commerce and Web Technologies, Construction
and Real Estate Development, Construction Technologies and energy especially oil (upstream and
downstream).
His functional experience includes general management (including having been an office of a US listed
entity); turnaround; corporate, market and business strategy; R &D and regulatory management; global and
European supply chain management; information and web technology and financial modelling and
appraisal.
He has worked and lived across numerous cultures (including the USA, France, GCC, Germany, Spain,
Africa and other countries) and having worked for both large corporations and a well-known entrepreneur.
In his social responsibility interests Richard has led a number of substantial "Not for Profit" initiatives and
turned round a charitable institution.
His public contributions have included various conference interventions for the European Commission and
its Agencies with a specific focus on business turnaround, entrepreneurship and innovation. Richard served
on the Enterprise Policy Group of the European Union for a number of years.
