According to news article posted on the World Gold Council web site, gold nanoparticles ten thousand times smaller than a human hair could be used to break down chemicals in drinking water and reduce pollution.

It said the particles, which mix gold and palladium, are the creation of engineer Dr Michael Wong from Rice University in Houston, Texas. Dr Wong was recently named among Smithsonian magazine's America's Young Innovators.

His particles are used alongside hydrogen to break down harmful solvents and other chemicals in groundwater, making it safer for both humans and animals.

Dr Wong commented that the gold nanoparticles are more efficient than the carbon ones currently used to decontaminate water - and they are also cheaper to produce.

Reducing pollution in drinking water is a key health and environmental concern in the United States. According to the site, Dr Wong says groundwater in 30 out of the union's 50 states has been designated as being "highly contaminated" by the Environmental Protection Agency.

He now plans to test his nanoparticles at military sites before moving on to industrial and commercial businesses.

Contaminants commonly found in US drinking water include micro-organisms, naturally occurring chemicals and disinfection byproducts.

I am really not sure about gold purifing water but yes there is a very good article on purification of water in Down to Earth journal I was reading the other day. It throws light on issues and BIS standards that are being followed in our country. Anyone interested may please go through the article in the journal.

High nitrate levels in drinking water has been proven to have harmful effects on infants. Infants who are given water or formula made with water containig high levels of nitrate often develop a condition called methemoglobinemia. It is also called "blue baby syndrome" because of the blue-gray or lavender in color of the babies skin. This is caused by a lack of oxygen in the blood.
Who is at risk? Infants that are under six months of age are at risk of nitrate poisoning, though some babies may be more affected than others. Infants with "blue baby syndrome" should recieve immediate medical care or condition can lead to coma and death.
People with heart or lung disease, and certain inherited enzyme defects, or cancer might be more sensitive to the toxic effects of nitrate than others. Some experts are begining to believe that long-term ingestion of water high in nitrate may increase the risk of certain types of cancer.
