Description
Global Network Week Entrepreneurship & Business Responsibility In The Hub Of Asia

Welcome!
On behalf of Hong Kong University of Science & Technology (HKUST) and MBA Programs, I
would like to welcome you to the 2015 Global Network Week, to be held from March 16 to 20
at our HKUST Campus. The GN Week at HKUST will address the topic: “Entrepreneurship and
Business Responsibility in the Hub of Asia”.

In the modern business environment, business leaders have a greater sense of social
consciousness that brings them pressure to think of a successful, efficient, sustainable and socially responsible
model. Hong Kong, as the hub of financial center, is recognized as a low-taxed, free trade and full of opportunities
under a well-established legal system. Entrepreneurs are nurtured in this small city for their dreams and many of
them set up their new businesses with visions of a better environment, ecosystem, and improvement of living
quality. During the GN Week, entrepreneurs from social ventures and family businesses, venture capitalists and
global business leaders will gather to discuss the challenges and opportunities of adopting business practices and
responsible investment that will benefit the shareholders, individuals and community at large. Thank you to our
corporate partners and HKUST Alumni, you will have the opportunity to meet with the senior management from
internationally renowned social enterprises and start-ups from BluePrint Swire, Love plus Hope, Mad Head, a few
successful incubators at the Hong Kong Science Park and Social Ventures Hong Kong.

The GN Week at HKUST is a highly experimental course. The purpose of this course is to give students a
comprehensive understanding of the environment in Hong Kong and Greater China for entrepreneurship, social
enterprise, and family business. Apart from lectures taught by our faculty team: Prof. Po Chi Wu, Prof. Christine
Chow, Prof. Roger King, you will also learn the subject by hearing the first-hand experience at panel discussions and
of course peer learning with your classmates from all over the world.

It is our sincere hope that the GN Week at HKUST will bring you a fruitful learning journey and let you understand
more the making of this beautiful city - Hong Kong.

Sincerely,

Etta Wong

Course Information

Course Description
The purpose of this course is to give students a comprehensive understanding of the environment in Hong Kong and
Greater China for entrepreneurship, social enterprise, and family business. The course will cover the following topics:
? Entrepreneurship & Business Responsibility
? Responsible/Impact Investing
? Family Business & Social Enterprise

Students will interact with HKUST faculty and industry practitioners, including local entrepreneurs, in lively
discussions and will also visit several incubators/accelerators and social enterprises.

Course Requirements
? Complete the pre-visit assignment*
? Attend all lectures, presentations and site visits in Hong Kong during the academic program
? Complete all deliverables

Pre-Visit Reading
The main theme of this program is to explore how entrepreneurs and entrepreneurial social ventures in Hong Kong
survive and thrive. Especially for any program focused on “social good”, one of the critical challenges is balancing
idealism with practical realities, e.g., funding support.

Individual Assignment for pre-visit report
Students are required to review both articles suggested as pre-visit reading. Each student may choose to write a pre-
visit assignment report on either Topic 1 or Topic 2:

Topic 1): entrepreneurship in general -- after reading the article on Europe’s Competitiveness, summarize, in a brief
essay of less than 500 words, the key challenges facing entrepreneurs in Europe
OR
Topic 2) challenges of financing for social enterprises -- after reading the chapter by Christine Chow, provide written
responses to the following questions:
a) What is the difference between social and sustainable finance within the theme of responsible investing?
b) What are the pros and cons of crowd financing? How do you manage the upside and downside of high profile
and transparent fund raising activities?

And, also post on course LMES (Discussion tab), list 5 questions that you will want to ask of the entrepreneurs you
will be meeting in Hong Kong.

Teamwork
Based on the topics of the pre-visit reports, students will be grouped into teams of five, according to their interests.
Teams will be chosen to have as much diversity as possible.

Team assignment for Final Team Presentation
During the visit to Hong Kong, students will meet several local entrepreneurs and investors and hear professors
discuss various aspects of entrepreneurship, social enterprises and family businesses. In the morning of the final day,
Friday, 20 March, each team will make a 12-minute presentation to the entire group that summarizes what they have
learned during the week. At least two members of each team must participate in the presentation.

The following topics are to be addressed in the presentation:
? How are the environment and ecosystem in Hong Kong different from cities in other countries?
? What are particular challenges and strengths of entrepreneurs in Hong Kong?
? After we return home, what can we apply from what we have learned from the examples in Hong Kong?

Individual Final Report
Each student must write a brief essay of less than 500 words addressing the following:
? How do I personally intend to apply what I have learned in Hong Kong?
? What has inspired me? How might I act on that inspiration?
? What specific actions will I take, after I return home?

Grading
The general grading policy of this program is Pass/Fail. However, some educational institutions may require a letter
grade. Students will be graded on the pre-visit report, the team presentation and the final individual report. The
grades for the team presentations will also contribute to individual final grades.

HKUST professors will grade the students based on the following:
? Individual Pre-Visit Report (25%)
? Team Presentation (50%)
? Individual Final Report (25%)
Passing grade will be granted if they can achieve B or above as equivalent. Grades range in equal increments from A+
to F. A failed course (graded F) cannot be credited toward a program. The grades C- to D-, and E, are not used in
postgraduate courses. For the purpose of calculating the grade averages, numerical grade points are assigned to
each course grade. The grades used are shown in the following table.
HKUST Grading Scale

Attendance Policy
Attendance and full participation is essential to the experiential learning for intensive, international programs. All
students must attend all required sessions which may include lectures, speaker sessions and corporate
visits. Attendance will be taken at every session on every day of the program. Required sessions are marked on the
syllabus.

Due to the importance to the learning experience, failure to attend or arriving late to a required session will result in
a lower final grade for the course. Any session missed will result in the deduction of a half letter grade.

Diamond Cab
Doris Leung, Founder & CEO Diamond Cab
Doris Leung joined SVhk in 2007 as a volunteer to nurture the project idea of wheelchair accessible vehicles in Hong
Kong, the same year her beloved mum became wheelchair-bound due to a disability caused by a brain tumour.
Seeing Doris' passion in social ventures, Francis Ngai, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of SVhk, invited Doris to be
the Executive Director of SVhk in 2008 where her main responsibilities included re-organizing the membership and
engagement of professional volunteers and promoting the SVhk brand through public events.
Doris left her previous job as a TV journalist in 2009 to realize the barrier-free taxis for wheelchair users project full
time. Diamond Cab was official launched in February 2011 and Doris became its Chief Executive Officer. As the
Executive Director of SVhk, Doris still supports other portfolio social ventures with her precious experience of starting
as well as running Diamond Cab. She also manages external partnerships of the Sonova Institute which promotes
social entrepreneurship.
Doris enjoys seeing the significant and enduring social impact created by SVhk and Diamond Cab. Over the years, she
has witnessed how different sectors in Hong Kong have actively transformed from the traditional charity mindset into
endorsing the new blended value of social entrepreneurship.
Among all social issues, aging population is at the top of Doris' mind because she has personally experienced the
sophisticated care an elder needs when her mum was wheelchair-bound. With Diamond Cab, Doris hopes to
coordinate global resources to explore the business opportunities associated with aged consumers and in the end
benefit elders in need.
Doris was a Principal Reporter at i-Cable News before joining SVhk. Her rich experience in media engagement allows
her to empower other social ventures and give practical advice.

Currently I am studying in the Executive MBA Program of Seoul National University
Business School. I am also working as CEO of INTEROHRIGIN, an advertising agency, in
Seoul, South Korea. The agency was founded in August 2003 and I have been managing the
company for 11 years. Although it is not a big company, I faced several difficulties in
running a company. So I decided to study Business Management professionally after careful
consideration and entered the best business school in Korea, the Executive MBA Program
of Seoul National University Business School. As hard as it was to enter, it was also difficult
to take the classes. But I am working hard and learning a lot about the theories and the
actual work of business administration through the sophisticated teaching staff and the
well-organized curriculum. Building a network with my fellows who are in the same courses
is giving me a lot of help in my business. I am getting a lot of advice from my seniors who
have managed a company longer than I have and I am studying and experiencing a lot. I am
feeling the pressure of balancing business and study but there are more gains then losses,
so currently I feel very excited. I was very sad that it was only for 1 week, a very short time.
But I was glad when the school provided the opportunity to participate in the Global
