Dear Shutdown, Turnaround and Outage Professionals,
As a key player in the turnaround community, you know the importance of having
the critical skills and techniques to execute the most e?ective turnaround possible.
The Shutdowns Superconference has been a signi?cant part of this community, bringing
together the players – from junior to advanced, who meet in one place at one time to
learn how to deliver a turnaround that is on time, on budget and safe.
We know you’ve come to expect – and we’ve always delivered a superior learning
experience with a program that is content rich, highly relevant, and practical.
Tis year’s program is no exception, with operator case studies, in-depth sessions
and interactive panel discussions from across a variety of industries from mining to
petrochemical and oil and gas. Whether your turnaround is on a large-scale or smaller-
scale, this event will give you working solutions to the challenges your face on the
ground, in the plant.
Every year you tell us about the nuggets of information you get, the valuable takeaways,
the business deals you’ve arranged and the friends you’ve met. No other event o?ers the
same level of expertise, and the many networking opportunities before and during the
conference at cocktail receptions, and co?ee breaks in the adjoining exhibit area.
Whether you’re an operator, contractor or supplier, rest assured that you will walk away
with the critical knowledge and tools to e?ectively plan and lead a successful shutdown,
from start up to close out to re-start.
Please join us in December in Calgary and I look forward to seeing you there!

The Turnaround Management Process from A to Z:
Developing a Sound Planning and Management Strategy
9:00 am – 12:30 pm (Registration opens at 8:30)
Pat Synnott
Manager Maintenance Engineering/Training
Jacobs Industrial Services Ltd.
Plant managers are continually confronted with the unpleasant consequences of chronic
problems and poor performance during the planning and execution of plant turnarounds.
Effective planning and understanding the keys to excellence in turnaround management are
necessary to avoid the obstacles many organizations have come to accept as routine.
In this interactive, three hour workshop, you’ll discuss with a leading consultant and trainer in
turnaround planning and management, the best practices in the industry, and perhaps more
informative, some of the worst practices. You will discuss the keys to success in the four phases of
turnarounds: Strategic Planning, Work Scope Development, Execution and Closure. You’ll examine:
• Current methods verses best practices
• Setting speci?c turnaround goals and objectives
• Direct work verses indirect work
• Cost and progress status – how to assess impact of changes
• How to create achievable and cost effective schedules
• Using process speci?c benchmark standards
• Turnaround closure
This hands-on workshop will go in-depth into project planning and scheduling techniques to
organize and execute a successful turnaround project. To achieve optimal results from the
shutdown process companies need to identify their core project goals and priorities. To determine
the strategies that will ensure your next turnaround’s success, this workshop will identify best
practices required to bring your future shutdown to the next level.

9:15 Plan to Plan a Turnaround Event
Ron Kooy
Turnaround Leader
Valero Energy Corporation, Wilmington Re?nery
Developing a plant’s culture to include the importance of turnarounds
can be a daunting experience. The focus on turnarounds in the early
days was viewed as a “maintenance cost of business event” that
seldom gained interest from the organization until shortly before the
execution window.
This presentation will outline the key elements of how to develop a
‘Plan to Plan’ turnaround event. A successfully executed turnaround is
dependent on the ability of the planning team to identify, understand
and adhere to key milestones during the planning process. This session
will cover the make-up of turnaround teams along with clearly de?ned
expectation and goals. The presentation will also include the process
of a Phased and Gated planning effort and touch on the importance of
building equipment speci?c templates in your CCMS systems. A well
thought out planning effort with a clearly de?ned timeline will have a
measurable positive impact on the execution of a successful turnaround.
• How to engage all re?nery departments
• Accountability the "Old Stick & Carrot Game"
• How to stay on task and measure your success
10:00 Aligning Turnaround Projects and Modifications with Maintenance
Inspections and Operations for Superior Shutdown Performance
Mike Grabill
Global Operations Turnaround Specialist
BP America Inc
Turnarounds depend on de?ning scope, duration and budget. However
ultimately, the success of the event depends on stakeholders jointly
working to reduce threats and capitalize on opportunities throughout the
turnaround lifecycle. Stakeholder identi?cation, in?uence, engagement
and communication management are key attributes too often assumed
relationships impacting the ability to deliver success. This session will
delve into:
• Establishing a steering committee and core functional team
• Establishing stakeholder register and determining levels of in?uence
• Strategies and approaches for stakeholder engagement
• Maximizing communication tools and techniques

Turnarounds depend on de?ning scope, duration and budget. However
ultimately, the success of the event depends on stakeholders jointly
working to reduce threats and capitalize on opportunities throughout the

relationships impacting the ability to deliver success. This session will
delve into:
• Establishing a steering committee and core functional team
• Establishing stakeholder register and determining levels of in?uence
• Strategies and approaches for stakeholder engagement
• Maximizing communication tools and techniques
