The Supreme Court on Thursday has finally told the Centre to distribute free foodgrains to the hungry people of the country instead of allowing them to rot in godowns or storehouses. The court added that the Government should take up long-term measures like establishing one large FCI large godown in every state and one small godown in every division and district of the country. Earlier, CNN-IBN had exposed that tonnes of foodgrains were left to rot in warehouses and godowns including Government-owned ones in states like Punjab, Haryana, Bihar and Uttar Pradesh. This is a better option instead of wasting the foodgrains. The apex court also stressed the need to strengthen the Public Distribution System (PDS) in drought and flood-hit areas. To help the major chunk of the society, the court also has come up with the idea to keep the fare prices shop open 30 days a month.
