In a bid to boost the profile of basketball in India, the BFI has appointed Serbian Aleksandar Bucan as national coach for the next six months.
BFI secretary Harish Sharma said Bucan, who has wide experience of working with various age group and senior teams in Serbia, will help raise the standard of the sport in the country. “The step was taken to improve the standard of senior and junior players and to train the coaches of the country,” Sharma said.
Bucan will be attached with the various teams during which time he would attend the various coaching camps in the run-up to international meets. “This contract could be extended if the government and BFI agree to it,” he said. Bucan was the head coach of the Pioneer and Cadet national team of Yugoslavia which won the gold medal at the European cadet championship in 2001.
