The sunshine of 18th November was very special for IIM Indore as it was the first day of their Inter Collegiate festival Ahvan 2011.
As soon as we reached the venue from a distance we could just see students. It was just as a student fair. On enquiring we got to know from team Ahvan that there were close to100 participants from various B Schools such as IIM A, IIM K, SPJIMR, NITIE, MDI, ISB and several others. Many more expected in the next 2 days. Approximately 500 participants are were there on campus from various colleges of Indore.
This was the flow of events on Day 1:
Inauguration:
The inauguration to Ahvan’11 started at 11 am. The coordinator for Ahvan,Bhavin Parmar first addressed the gathering,speaking at length about Ahvan and some of its flagship events like Ashwamedha,Kapavriksha,Samanvay etc.The Director, IIM Indore,along with the Chief guest and key faculty members lighted the lamp to signal the launch of Ahvan’11.This was followed by the address of the Director,IIM Indore who spoke about Ahvan being the flagship management festival for IIM Indore. The coordinators for Samanvay briefed the gathering about the unified health insurance scheme offered to over 400 families this year.

Ms. Anupama Jha,Excutive Director,Transperency International.Transperency International, an NGO, is a global organization against corruption. It works against corruption in political,judicial and private sector and publishes an annual corruption index. Having prescence in over 100 countries, it is present in 4 states in India. Ms. Jha enlightened the public with some studies and surveys conducted by Transperency International. She talked about India ranking 87 out of 178 countries in Corruption Perception Index with a low score of 3.8 out of 10.According to India Corruption study, Indians below poverty line pay an estimated amount of 8000 million as bribe to get services meant to be given free to them- like electricity, NREGA.She shed some light on the functioning of LOKpal and how it would enable strengthening of the CBI and CVC. Efforts to bring back black money stashed in safe havens also formed an integral part of her speech. Ms Jha believes that unless people can change from within, no outside factors can help reduce corruption. She emphasized that parents play an important role in inculcating the right values into their children. After entertaining certain questions on topics such as RTI and how to change people’s behavior regarding corruption, she ended on a note to request people to pledge not to accept or give bribes.

Mr. Anupam Halder, Associate Director with the Consulting Division of PwC, Knowledge Partner of Ahvan addressed the audience on ‘Business Transformation’. He discussed the 5 W’s - the what, why, when, where, who of Business transformation. Any transformation is a change undergone in the shape/form or the structure of the organisation. Mr. Halder cited various examples of transformations seen in the business scenario like Internet Banking, E-ticketing, ATMs etc which have changed the way people view the world. Explaining that transformation is necessary to sustain,survive and grow, Mr.Halder said that this can be achieved by looking at either change in the structure or the process or the product. Finally he concluded by quoting that ‘managing the transformational change is the crictical challenge that any organisation faces’ and then opened the forum for queries. The lecture gave an insight into the various aspects that a management consultant should consider before planning for a Business Transformation.

Chankaya
The final round of Chanakya, held on the 1st day of Ahvan witnessed a set of 6 teams across B-Schools competing for the first spot. The finalists included teams from NITIE Mumbai, MDI, DoMS IIT Madras and IIM Indore. Mr.Uma Shankar, Senior Manager Consulting at Cognizant and Prof. DL Sunder, IIM Indore judged the event and gave valuable feedback to the participants. Team ‘Discsiples’ consisting of Mohit Bajaj and Annesha Pramanik from MDI Gurgaon were declared the winners and ‘3 Samurai’ from NITIE Mumbai were the runner-ups. The event really helped the participants and the audience gain insights within the consulting domain consulting

Ashwa1:
The first round of Ashwamedha started around 12 noon. The participants came from different B-schools - ISB,IIM Lucknow,IIM-Kozikode,IRMA,IIM Indore to name a few. This time Ashwamedha also opened participation to non B-schools which resulted in selected participants from MICA,Delhi School of Economics etc. In the first round the participants had to motivate school children in one way or the other. School children from Class IX-Class XI from various parts of Indore had gathered for this event. The participants chose a variety of topics to speak upon,ranging from bringing about a change in the society,overcoming corruption,helping the unfortunate to creating awareness on deaths due to road accidents.
This was followed by a feedback session where the children gave the feedback on each of the participant.
Ashwa 2:
The second round of Ashwamedha was a quiz conducted by Professor. Vijay Menon.The event stated at 2:30 pm in the Central lawn. The participants were divided in teams of 4.The quiz had an interesting format where the teams had to chose the incorrect of the 2 options for each question, in order to score points. The questions were asked from the field of capitals,nobel prize winners,personalities,Indian culture etc. The school students who has participated in the first round of Ashwamedha were among the audience. The school students were also given a chance to ask questions to the participants.

Round 3: Trading round
The complex trading round tested the participants on their negotiation skills, team dynamics and analytical skills. The round involved concepts of free market pricing and floating currency exchange rates with the participants having to collaborate with other participants inthe most chaotic of situations with each trying to maximize points.

Round 4: Grassroot round
The participants were subjected to a intense interview in front of 9 panel members, from different fields. The panelists included DC working with projects related to slum schools, academician, educationalist, vocalist, instrumentalist, a chef among others. They asked questions which were relevant to today's problems: strategy to develop education fro slums , media and privacy, is literature waning, steps to revive classical music in India, steps to bring holistic
education to people etc... Each one was asked 3 questions, and total time per participant was about 25 mins. There was cross questioning too. The participants were tested on their analytical and logical thinking, presence of mind, communication skills and confidence in formulating innovative strategies to these real-life problems

Fin 1 :
Round 1 (online quiz) and Round 2 (Case presentation) have already occurred before Ahvan 2011 launched. The 3rd round that took place from 1pm-3pm (18-Nov) was an online trading game titled ‘Invested Interest’. 6 groups were huddled around their computer monitors at the Computer lab on campus, and were battling it out virtually with the help of stocks, commodities and futures. 8 back-to-back rounds took place, each being 12 minutes long, wherein the groups had to choose wisely regarding where to invest based on certain info provided. Each new round came with new information that could either sink or propel one’s portfolio. Eventually, those teams that are able to accumulate the most wealth, will move on to the next coveted round taking place at 10:30pm (18th nov).

ManagementParadise which was their “B-School Connect Partner” helped them to arrange a show of Vipul Goyal who is a standup Comedian.VIPUL GOYAL is an Electrical Engineer from IIT Bombay. He worked as a Retail Analyst in Adventity Inc. for 6 months, but soon realized that his heart was in H.R. (HUMOR Resources). So he politely confessed to his boss one day, "Sir it might sound funny, but I can make people laugh!" He mixed laughs and Entrepreneurship and soon founded the most unique HR firm “Humorously Yours” which has been pioneers in stand up comedy and Entertainment .
Thus according to the audience Ahvan Day one was totally a value gaining and laugh riot day for them. As for the Ahvan team they are back to make arrangements so that they can prepare to welcome day 2 i.e. 19th November..
