Course Description:
This course is concerned with understanding how firms innovate and develop, acquire and
exploit technology and drives into a successful business. It deals with:
? The issues involved in managing innovation / new ideas and managing the medium term
& long-term development of technology in firms;
? The ways in which business strategies and technological competencies interact in the
firm.
? The challenges and rewards of entrepreneurship.
? Knowledge of how entrepreneurs and organizations create and capture value in national
and international markets.
? Explores various approaches employed by entrepreneurial organizations and considers the
skills and attributes needed to succeed in today's competitive and global environment.
The subject is expected to have high application in the practical work life and thus the major
emphasis will be on assimilating the learning through application of the theoretical inputs on
real life cases and situations.
Learning Objectives:
On completion of this course, students should:
? Understand the nature of innovation processes and become familiar with the
characteristics of technologies
? Understand the principles involved in managing innovation and the development of
technology in firms and the ways in which business strategies and technological
competencies interact;
? Have an appreciation of the concepts and ‘tools’ needed to analyze firms’ innovation and
technology strategies and know how to use these concepts/tools critically in a project
analysis of a real firm's activities; be able to cross-link knowledge about firms’
management of technology and innovation to broader government regulation,
competitiveness and economic issues.
? Identify the critical factors that are used to identify business start-up ideas – including
forms of ownership.
? Identify the critical concepts of business innovation and planning that are used to
? Develop a “blueprint” for a new business venture.
