I had done my summer internship at Jagatjit Cotton & Textile Mills Phagwara.

My training guide was Mr. B.H Khan ( Manager HR) at JCT Ltd. My college mentor was Ms. Jaschetan Deep Kaur . My project topic was Employee Welfare Health and Safety at Jagatjit Cotton & Textile Mills Phagwara.

JCT Limited Phagwara, is the flagship company of Thapar Group. It is one of the leading manufacturers and exporters of cotton and Synthetic textiles in the country.

It was incorporated on 28th October, 1946 under the name of M/S Jagatjit Cotton textiles Mills.

The mill is situated in Phagwara town on G.T. Road, the national highway number -1. It is 40 kilometres from Ludhiana towards Amritsar.

Lifting machines, chains, ropes and lifting tackles are monitored regularly and there is yearly check up of all these equipments.

?

There is special provision for carrying of weights in lifts the capacity of the lifts is mentioned and workers are not allowed to carry more weight as mentioned according to the safety standards.

There is no child labour in the organization and the women workers are not allowed to work near the cotton openers.

?

Safety measures are displayed all over the production plant and in case of fire there is fire extension exit and the workers are informed to gather at the assembly point.

Safety week- is celebrated in the factory for creating awareness for safety among the workers about the safety measures and training is provided to the workers for new technology and equipment handling.

The employees are provided by the medical insurance from Rs. 1 lakh-5 lakh according to the position held by the employee in the company. Throughout the year, free medical check-up camps are arranged in the mill’s residential campus for employees and their families. Free Eye Check-up and Operation Camps are organized in the mill’s colony with the assistance of team of eye-specialist doctors for general public. There is a dispensary in the factory premises’ with the availability of doctor.

Twenty four hours free ambulance facility is provided to the employees by the organization. Health education classes are organized by the organization and are conducted by prescribed doctors. Medical claim policies for managers and head of departments not under the ESI act, according to the salary slabs.

Sampling technique: Simple random sampling. Sample size: 50 employees of major departments of company and factory workers.

Findings

The first-aid facility is provided in almost each and every department of the company.

?

For the protection against fire and other losses, the company provides proper equipments, and safety tools in production areas including, fire extinguisher, fire blankets, gloves etc.

?

Employees are satisfied with the welfare measures provided by the company as all the provisions are followed according to the “Factories Act 1948.”

?

The company also provides voluntary welfare measures to the employees.

Safety trainings are provided periodically to the workers for the handling of machines and equipments to reduce the rate of accidents and about new technology changes.

The company has separate policies for the protection of pregnant women. And the women workers are not allowed to work in the night shifts

Each employee of the company have to undergo health-related tests at the time of their selection and also periodically for those working in the factory.

Recommendations
?

More reward schemes should be started in the organization to enhance the productivity of the employees.

?

Feedback is an important tool when a new scheme is launched in the company. So more feedback secessions should be conducted in the company.

?

It would be encouraging if JCT textile mill increase the amount spent on welfare schemes like transport facility, medical, canteen, etc.

?

The company should recruit more female employees as there are less female employees in some departments as compared to male employees.

Limitations of the study
?

As the primary data is collected through questionnaire, the sample size is limited to only 50 employees, due to continuous working hours in the factory and work shifts, it was unable to include more employees.

?

The major part of information is collected from male employees as there are very less female employees as compared to male employees, working there.

?

Due to busy working schedule of employees, they were unable to give their suggestions properly regarding the practices followed by company.

Conclusion
?

The JCT ltd. Phagwara provides exceptional welfare services to their employees, follows best practices which increases their motivation and performance levels. Apart from welfare services, company provides Safety and Health services, which helps in creating a safe working environment.
