Renys is a chain of department stores located in Maine that has been a part of Maine culture since 1949. Robert H. Reny opened his first store in Damariscotta, Maine. In 2004, two of his sons began running the chain.
The company motto is "A Maine Adventure."
In Fortune Magazine's Small Business column, Renys was cited as an example of a small business doing well in the face of competition from Wal-Mart. Renys management studied the competition and realized the company could have an advantage in clothing. They purchase small lots of high quality brands at a discount by buying production overruns, closeouts, irregulars, and factory seconds.[1]
The company headquarters and distribution center are located in Newcastle. There are currently 14 retail store locations, located in Bath, Belfast, Bridgton, Camden, Damariscotta (two stores), Dexter, Ellsworth, Farmington, Gardiner, Madison, Pittsfield, Saco, and Wells. A 15th location in downtown Portland will be opening in spring of 2011.
Fair play. Good Value. Service. Affordability. Quality. You will find all of this and more at Renys! We are a chain of small discount stores throughout Maine that have been a part of our state's culture since 1949. Renys started in 1949 when Robert H. Reny (better known to all as "R.H.") opened his first store in Damariscotta, Maine. The first winter was so slow that in order to keep the store open, Robert had to go door to door around the area selling merchandise out of his old Hudson. That winter he made so many friends that in the spring his new friends came in to shop at the store and the business has been growing ever since! His philosophy was simple - offer great value, make great buys of better merchandise and sell at the lowest possible price to his customers! That philosophy continues today.
Today Renys employs between 375 and 475 employees and has 14 store locations in Maine; namely, in the order they came into existence: Damariscotta (2), Bridgton, Gardiner, Farmington, Dexter, Madison, Pittsfield, Bath, Camden, Saco, Belfast, Ellsworth and Wells, plus the Office/Warehouse complex in Newcastle. Renys is one of the very few family owned businesses that still exist in the State of Maine.
Our stores are all small to medium sized, each with its own unique character. You'll find everything including, Carhartt jeans, Woolrich sweaters, Chippewa boots, all kinds of clothing, outerwear by famous makers, electronics, housewares, lawn and garden supplies, sheets and towels, and an awesome 99¢ department. If you need it, you can probably find it at Renys. As a matter of fact, it has been said, "If Renys doesn't have it, I don't need it!"
R.H's oldest son, John, joined the company in 1957 at the age of 5 and his middle son, Robert D. (better known as "Bob") Reny joined the company in 1959 at the age of 7. Today John and Bob are the chief buyers for the chain.
Our buyers travel to Boston, New York, Atlantic City, Atlanta, Las Vegas, Chicago or wherever else the pursuit of getting great buys takes us in our quest to have the best possible merchandise at the lowest possible prices. It is our goal to buy better merchandise to sell at low prices, rather than to get inexpensive merchandise to sell at inexpensive prices. We want our customers to like it when they buy it and we want them to love it 6 months later!
It's worth the trip to check out what we have on any given day because you never know what you'll find at our stores!!!
