There you are, sitting at your desk, 11hrs into your workday relentlessly trying to finish a project. Just as you are about to call it in for the night one of the project managers walks in to inform you that they have been offered a better job and are leaving. This is the project manager that you had picked after reading through a tower of resumes, spent endless hours training and paid a more then competitive wage.
The first question that would pop into anyone's mind is, 'Why?' With them gone, how are you ever going to finish this project, are there other people thinking of leaving too?
With the current workforce in a strange limbo between young and demanding and old and heading to retirement, a huge challenge lies in the face of employers. Professionals in human resources estimate that three out of every ten employees are going to retire in the next ten years.
One of the biggest fears of employers is losing their best, most hard working employee to the competitor across the street. One of the biggest factors having a disastrous effect on many businesses and how hard it is to find qualified employees and once you do, how hard it is to keep them. Along with many people heading towards retirement, many surveys and questionnaires indicate that one third of people plan on quitting their jobs within the next year.
There are many reasons people decide to leave their jobs, obviously money and benefits are two very common reasons. In the workplace some amount of turnover is unavoidable, but with minimal effort making a major difference in the retention of employees is made a lot more possible.
Hire only well qualified people. A single person with a good work ethic and puts together productive days is much more valuable then twenty or thirty average workers. Many companies would rather leave a position open and wait for the right person than to hire a sub-par employee only to fire them soon after. Taking initiative and going out to find qualified, high-caliber people can pay off much more than waiting for the ideal resume to come across your desk.
Making a good first impression is absolutely key in retaining employees. Many organizations notice the highest level of turnover in positions in the first ninety days after being hired. Reorganize the way you welcome new employees into the workplace. Make sure the first few weeks are a positive and fun. This way the new employees will be comfortable in their choice and proud to be part of your work team.
