American Family Insurance (aka AmFam) is a private mutual company that focuses on property, casualty and auto insurance, but also offers commercial insurance, life, health, and homeowners coverage, as well as investment and retirement-planning products. A Fortune 500 company, its revenues for 2008 were over $6.7 billion
I have been with American Family for 33 years. That is very much the profile with American Family, very loyal. We treat employees well, sales people well, and we just have good employee retention. Talent management is a corporate initiative and we work on developing people in every level of the organization. We don’t always have to go outside to find people — we bring them in at entry level positions and help them to develop. Under the talent management program, we have different ways that we help people along. Some of them are with mentor/mentee relationships, internal coaches, external coaches, peer groups, and leadership roundtables — where they work together. There are a variety of ways that we work on their career plans.
Benefits, Pay & More
Here at American Family Insurance we’re committed to providing a positive work experience for all of our employees. We believe that only when you are free to focus on your work you are able to reach your fullest potential - and help us reach ours!
Of course, two key components of that positive work experience are benefits and pay. But that’s only part of the story.
We also offer flexible work schedules so you can balance your work life and your personal life. We can even provide help with relocation if you need it.
All in all, we think you’ll find that American Family Insurance is a place where you can be - and do - your best!
Different benefits plan packages are offered to employees in different employment classifications. In other words, whether the position you are offered is full or part-time, or an internship will determine which benefit plan options are available to you.
American Family Insurance agents are independent contractors and are not offered benefits.
American Family Insurance's history began on October 3, 1927[5], when insurance salesman Herman Wittwer opened the doors of Farmers Mutual Insurance Company in Madison, Wisconsin (not to be confused with the Farmers Insurance Group). At the time, the company's only product was auto insurance and its target market was farmers. Wittwer believed farmers presented lower risks than city drivers because they drove less often and not at all in the winter [5].
Over the years, Farmers Mutual expanded its market and product line to meet the changing needs of its customers. In 1963, Farmers Mutual changed its name to American Family Mutual Insurance Company to reflect its broader customer base.
