Yes No
Academic Issues

being considered set and maintained at the appropriate level?
YES
Student Performance

level set?
YES
Assessment
Is the assessment process appropriate, rigorous, equitable and
conducted in accordance with University guidance?
YES
Comparable Standards
Is the standard and level of student achievement comparable with
those in other higher education institutions?
YES
If you answered no to any of the questions please provide details in section C as
appropriate.
Section C:
1) Comparability
Please comment on the comparability of standards of student work between modules within
a course (if appropriate) and those in other higher education institutions you may be familiar
with.
I am presently senior teaching fellow entrepreneurship at the XXXXXX
We presently run a number of entrepreneurship modules including a module in Business Growth
Issues.
The standard of work and the presentation of that work is on a par with that of XXXX. There are no
meaningful differences in the two.
2) Commentary on Academic issues
Is the academic standard of each module or programme of study being considered set
and maintained at the appropriate level?
YES
I have no problems with the standard. The work of the staff to maintain this standard is clearly seen.
3) Student Performance
Please comment on the strengths and weaknesses of the student performance with respect
to module and/or programme content
As in many other institutions student performance varies . Napier has some excellent
work/students. Often the only real problem is the grasp of English which works against the overseas
students.
4) Learning and Teaching
Please comment on the effectiveness of the Learning and Teaching methods employed on
the modules and/or programmes
There is a very good and varied approach to the teaching and assessment at Napier with a wide
range of assessment methods including presentations and business reports for local companies.
5) Assessment
Please comment on the fairness and the rigour of the assessment and feedback process
employed on the modules and/or programmes
The process at Napier is very clear. The markers make good use of the opportunity to spread the
range of marks awarded. They are not afraid to utilise the full range from a high grade to a clear fail.
The feedback to the students that is copied to me is very detailed and helpful.
6) Good practice
Please comment on any areas of good practice that you wish to highlight
Modules such as ENT 10103 show very good examples of the range of very interesting and varied
businesses that the students are asked to produce reports on.
7) Recommendations
Please specify any recommendations that you wish to make.
I think that the one or two elements of the material used by students could be improved
especially in the financial side where students are struggling to analyse the financial
performance of their chosen business.
Students could also pay more attention to the physical presentation of their work as often
what they have done is undermined by the poor attention to the visual impact of their work.
I have mentioned this to the staff concerned on the module board for the Entrepreneurship
Centre.

b) an overview of your term of office (when concluded).
Anything that I have raised with the Module Board for the Entrepreneurship Centre has always been
dealt with quickly. My overall concern is only that the time scales for marking and turnaround of
material from the markers to me as external examiner is to my mind far too tight for all concerned.
Thank you for completing this report and for undertaking External Examiner duties at
