ECU Enterprise Tuesday is a series of eight free
evening lectures and networking sessions aimed
at inspiring entrepreneurship and linking the
world of academia with the business community.
It is open to all, from ECU researchers, students
and staff, to community members and business
owners and start-ups, and is delivered by ECU’s
Office of Research and Innovation.
The series provides an opportunity for the
business community to mix with academic talent /
researchers, and is an opportunity for all
participants to build and extend their quality
networks. The eight sessions form a complete
educational program which aims to inspire
attendees to consider launching a start-up
business based on a new idea, or
commercialising their academic research.

Lifestyle vs. High Growth; which model is
right for you and your business?
The final Session of Enterprise Tuesday is a panel
Session that discusses the differences between
lifestyle and high growth ventures, and the capabilities
and characteristics of the entrepreneurs who found
them.
It features an experienced panel led by Matt
Macfarlane and includes experts in funding high growth
businesses from Cambridge, UK who will be
videoconferencing into Enterprise Tuesday live from
Cambridge.

Session 8 Panellists
Mr Matt Macfarlane
Matt is a Co-founder and Investment Director at Yuuwa Capital, a Perth based $40m early stage
venture capital fund launched in 2009. Matt has been both an investor and an entrepreneur in
early stage tech startups; actively participating in the startup eco-system in Perth for over 10
years. He has a strong focus on identifying attractive seed and growth-stage investment
opportunities. Matt works hands-on with startup companies to assist in building teams accelerating
growth, achieving milestones and securing additional financing. He has mentored for: the
Founder's Institute (Perth Chapter) and the RAC SeedSpark corporate accelerator program.
Hugh Parnell
Hugh Parnell is Chairman of Cambridge Cleantech and of several other growth companies;
Growth Accelerator coach, mentor or advisor on angel/VC equity; consultant for early stage
entrepreneurial business growth. Qualified as a chartered accountant, Hugh had a diverse career
around finance and business development over 16 years with British Petroleum, six years doing
international corporate finance and, since 2000, helping business in the Cambridge
technology/innovation community. He is also involved in various not-for-profit activities and is
presently campaigning for an ESCO for Cambridgeshire.
David Gill
David Gill is Managing Director of the St J ohn’s Innovation Centre in Cambridge. He previously
established the Innovation & Technology Unit at HSBC Bank in London (1997-2004), then served
as an executive director of a venture fund focused on early-stage, technology-based investments
(2005-08). Educated at Cambridge, David is currently an Academic Collaborator at the University
of Cambridge Institute for Manufacturing and a non-executive director of a number of start-up
companies (Psonar Ltd, Syndicate Room Ltd). He is also chair of the steering committee of
ideaSpace, the University of Cambridge pre-incubator.
Walter Herriot
Walter Herriot OBE was the Managing Director of St. J ohn’s Innovation Centre Ltd from 1990
until retirement in November 2008. In 1999 he was awarded an OBE for services to businesses in
the East of England. In 2002 was the Cambridge Evening News "Businessman of the Year". In
2006 he received the Queens Award for Enterprise Promotion and was appointed Visiting
Professor at the University of Hertfordshire. In 2008 Walter received an honorary doctorate from
Anglia Ruskin University. Following retirement he formed his own Consultancy, Herriot
Associates and in the public sector has worked with EEDA, ARU, University of Cambridge and
more.
Ray Hart
Ray is a chartered accountant by profession, initially launching his career in Perth. He’s worked
overseas for the last 15 years on company formation and turnaround roles ranging from startups
to large corporates. Most recently, he led the turnaround of Air Malta, Malta’s national airline;
familiar territory thanks to his experience in a similar role working for the Government of Trinidad
and Tobago when launching Caribbean Airlines. Ray was the founding chairman, and still a
committee member, of the WA Angels. He currently has a number of startup ventures, both in
Australia and overseas, across mining services, agriculture and aviation.
Paul Kristensen
Paul Kristensen, B.Sc Mech Eng, MIEAust, CPEng, is the owner of Perth technology venture
investment firm Capital Technologies Pty Ltd. He has been an early stage founder or executive
director of a series of technology and investment companies, including ERG (now Vix), Kinetic
Suspension Systems, Dynamic Digital Depth and Lumitex. More recently, he co-founded
Accumulus Pte Ltd and HIVAP Global Cooling Pty Ltd. He has served as a Governor and
Chairman of the Central Institute of Technology in Perth, and is co-founder of WA Angel
Investors, Inc. Currently he is a non-executive director of Lumitex Ltd, Stochastic Simulation Ltd,
Asia Pacific Technology Ltd (Hong Kong), HIVAP Global Cooling and DDD Group PLC
(DDD.com).
