E-Summit2011, IIM Kozhikode
Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Kozhikode successfully hosted E-Summit (Entrepreneurship Summit), a two day event on 3-4th September 2011 at IIM Kozhikode campus. E-Summit 2011, presented by Canara Bank and Entrepreneurship Cell of IIM Kozhikode,included a gamut of activities such as entrepreneurial guest lectures, workshops, and panel discussions with experts, startup fair, investment fair and the entrepreneurship bus journey –Sahkarita (Collaboration) Yatra from Bangalore to Calicut.
E-Summit formally started with the kick-off of the Sahkarita Yatra. A bus, full of entrepreneurs, professionals and students, made the journey from Flipkart office in Bangalore to Kozhikode and back to attend the E-Summit at IIM Kozhikode.
The inaugural address was given by the Dean (Development) of IIMK; Dr. Sanal Kumar Velayudhan.He spoke about the role that IIMK can play in economic diversification and on the strong connection between economic diversity and sustainability. Mr. K.R Balachandran, DGM, Calicut Circle, Canara Bank (Chief Sponsor of E-Summit) spoke on the commitment that Canara Bank has towards helping budding entrepreneurs and social projects through a pool of money contributed by employees.
In his workshop on "How to expand a startup business", Mr.Murlidharan (Vice Chairman (acting) and treasurer of The Electronics Group Dubai) emphasized on the relevance of having a partner in an entrepreneurship venture and also highlighted on the characteristics of the partner.Mr. Paul Thomas, Founder and Executive Director of Evangelical Social Action Forum (ESAF), laid focus on the need to work for the community and help people to come out of poverty. Mr. Bipin Chandran, Chief Editor of Business magazine "Entrepreneur" of Infomedia18, laid emphasis on the fact that the traditional risk-averse Indian perception will have to change if more people opt to be entrepreneurs.
In his workshop on ‘How to reduce cost in a start-up business’, Prof. Mukesh Hans (presently with International Institute of Fashion Technology (IIFT)) asked young entrepreneurs to be aware of their environment as only a deep understanding of this helps the business.
Shamanth Rao, an IIM Kozhikode alumnus, spoke on ‘Mobile Marketing’ and also conducted Enquisite – an entrepreneurship quiz. During his extremely interactive session he explored the potential of the mobile phone as a means of marketing. The end of day One witnessed a Cultural Night featuring Bharatnatyam, Mohiniyattam and Kuchipudi dance performances and also a Networking Dinner.
Day Two started with the address by Ms. Shradha Sharma, founder of YourStory.in and "NASSCOM Ecosystem Evangelist Award" in year 2010. She was especially enthusiastic about giving start-ups a platform to expose themselves to the market as well as get to interact with other people in their domain. In his B-Plan workshop, Mr. Aalok Pandey (who heads APD Innovation Ventures) explained how to make and present a business plan to VCs, which was well appreciated by the entrepreneurs. There was a lively Panel Discussion on ‘Raising Investments for a Startup’, the panelists being Mr. Avira Tharakan (Founder and CEO of myeasydocs.com), Ms. Shradha Sharma and Mr. Bipin Chandran. Mr. Swapnil Dixit (Co-founder and Executive Director for Jagriti Yatra) elaborated on the main theme of awakening India’s youth to the prospects of entrepreneurship for which he employs the “Jagriti Yatra”. The last session of E-Summit was a very engrossing one. Mr. Mansukhbhai Prajapati, the creator of Mitticool (Clay refrigerator that works without electricity using the principle of evaporation) narrated the inspiring story of his entrepreneurial journey from a tea stall to Mitticool. He is among Forbes list of seven most powerful rural Indian entrepreneurs. National Geographic awarded him the title of International Eco Hero (2010).The Start-up Fair witnessed different start-ups offering live projects to the students of IIMK. Also the Investment Fair involved IIMK students helping the invited start-ups to pitch in front of Venture Capitalist firm, Secura Investment Mangement Pvt. Ltd., for their own funding requirements. The online competitions and quiz competition witnessed an overwhelming response from participants from around India.
