e-newspaper - Any good for the media house?

I could read almost all the newspaper online that too for free.What is the most compelling reason for the newspaper houses to issue paper online for free?Where are they making this money?It would be enough to provide the headlines on the website.But issuing the complete paper online is something good for the consumer.But why are the media houses doing it?Where are they making the revenue by releasing the newspaper online?

They do so because it attracts online readers, which in turn creates a market for advertisers. While most papers are free to read, they carry ads ... this is how papers finance online news ..

I agree that online space are used for advertising.But no.of online readers will not be dependable bcos they are not anyway paid readers so they may switch to other papers.Moreover,we don't have clear statistics on the online readership for every newspaper cos it doesn't require a person to get registered to read a newspaper.I don't see the same being followed by international papers like WSJ(WallStreet Journal) where some of the contents will be available only for paid members.
