Wall Street Journal ( WSJ ) recently did a story on why MBA isn't as great an investment as it could be.

It is unclear how many M.B.A.s the market really needs. Recently, more companies have indicated that "they are moving away from an emphasis on M.B.A.s" and are instead hiring more undergraduates at lower salaries that they can then train in-house, says Camille Kelly, vice president of employer branding at Universum, a firm that advises companies on how to attract and retain the best employees. Companies, she says, "still will do M.B.A. hiring, but it won't be to the same extent they have in the past."

Shortly thereafter, an angel investor and Wharton MBA from 2002 wrote ' If you can’t get into a top-five MBA program, don’t even bother " Source : If you can’t get into a top-five MBA program, don’t even bother – Quartz

Poets and Quants recently did an article claiming WSJ's piece as "Silly News" . Source : http://poetsandquants.com/2013/01/07/wsj-claims-mba-pay-is-falling/

What are your views? Has MBA lost its worth?

MBA has a significant value previously, however lately due to the emergence of the ITES and the BPO industry, the scope of MBA aspirants has diminished.

MBA is important if you really want to do something in the business world. some (many actually) companies especially big companies not require it as part of your experience. so if you want to be a manager (depending on what kind and for whom) you probably will be required to have your MBA and the time under your belt. It would be a good idea to start to try and get work experience through work or a internship at a small or bigger company to get your feet wet a little. any and all experience helps. make sure it is really what you want.

I totally agree with you kartik.Today company are hiring less mba's.Their explanation is that what mba can do after getting a training of about 2 months at their organisation ,the same thing b.com and other graduates can do after getting a training of 1 year and also at a package which is much much lesser than those of mba guys. Also mba guys from IIM's and other top B-schools much ego which prevents them from taking up work that is not upto their own standard whereas these graduates are boss driven employees ready to perform any work

I think its not the degree which matters but its also your performance your smartness and finally your knowledge that you learn in the academic years. iTS NOT THE COUNT OF so many mbaS IN THE MARKET BUT IT THE TOUGH COMPETITION. So whether you want to become an MBA or Doctor you mut be the bet in your field than th ladder to success automatically becomes easy and small to climb.
:)

I think we should not do MBA for job purpose, If a person want to do job after MBA, he is doing wrong. MBA is for business purpose when your aim is you do only business in the career then MBA is right choice.

Quite an interesting topic we have up here!

Well to begin with, Being an MBA myself, I have faced many issues as well. Firstly, MBA helps you and polishes your personality tremendously, there are lot of things which i got to learn during my 2 yr MBA course and I'm glad i did it but when it came to job it was difficult because i was a fresher - there is a myth that if you do MBA you end up being a Manager (a long way to go i say even after MBA).

Sometimes it becomes extremely difficult for people like us to get the desired job profile/package. There are a lot of my friends who have done their MBA and are still unemployed, there are either no jobs or jobs which don't fit in their expectations.

MBA has become a basic qualification these days & some organizations will not hire you if you are not an MBA. My only suggestion would be, go for an MBA only after a minimum experience of 1/2 years or when you are done with your MBA.
